8 Things Penny Dreadful Can Teach Us About Romance

June 30, 2014/in Date Tips /by Guest Blogger

The season finale of Penny Dreadful was just last night. As I lament over the end of Season 1, and look forward to season 2, I can’t help but to think about how some of the romantic elements in the show can apply to dating in real life.
So Penny Dreadful isn’t really romantic, with all the violence and horror, but there are a lot of titillating scenes and romantic subplots that can teach us a thing or two about spicing up our love lives.
1) Walks in arboretums can be quite flirtatious.

2) Surprise your date with a really good date.
Brona had never been to the theater before, so just look at how elated she is when Ethan surprises her by taking her one night! Bonus: he buys her an orange.

3) Play music to set the mood when you’re together.

4) Sexy Boudoir photoshoots can really spice things up.

5) Sincere compliments are ALWAYS appreciated.

6) Have intriguing conversations over dinner.

7) Asking for consent is always appreciated.
If a spoiled, manipulative, and immortal brat like Dorian can ask for consent, so can everyone else.

8) But above all, be there for each other as confidantes and trusted loved ones.

Creative Date Ideas in LA: Spontaneous San Diego Road Trip

July 26, 2013/in LA /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Catherine Nguyen

Hey LA Bagels!
For those living in the city of Angeles and looking to escape the foggy pollution for some blue skies, look no further than the beautiful city of San Diego. Although total drive time is about 2 hours, there is nothing more beautiful than driving down the I-5 with the beautiful Pacific Ocean view to your right and an even more beautiful Bagel to your immediate right.
There’s more to San Diego than just beaches and burritos – check out the following creative date ideas in LA for how to make the most out of a spontaneous road trip to San Diego!
Strawberry Picking
On your way down the 5 towards San Diego, stop by Carlsbad for some strawberry picking before the season ends with U-Pick Carlsbad Strawberry Company! For $10-20, you get a good sized bucket to fill it up with freshly picked strawberries for the rest of the drive down.
How to get there: From the I-5, merge onto CA-78 E to take the County Highway S11 exit. Turn right onto El Camino Road, and then left onto Cannon Road, and you should be able to smell your destination up ahead!
Tips for the picking: Yelpers have claimed to have brought their own bucket, but the company only allows you to use theirs. Come with an empty stomach and maybe you’ll be able to taste some while you’re picking away!

Hike the Potato Chip Rock
No, we don’t mean eat potato chips! Get active with your Bagel and hike the famous San Diego potato chip hike – known for looking like it is going to break any second.
How to get there: Once you’re on I-15, take the Poway Road exit by Poway Lake. Keep driving until you see a sign for the trail. Note – parking will cost 8 dollars if you’re a non-resident of Poway, but the view will be worth it!
The viewpoint: the trail extends around the lake, starting by the bathroom. Continue on the trail and you should see several rock formations. Once you see the potato chip rock in the distance, whip out your camera and get ready to snap some awesome jumping shots (if you dare!).

Extraordinary Desserts
This classy little San Diego spot sure lives up to its name when it comes to serving dessert. Each dish that comes out of the kitchen looks like something out of a magazine. From fresh fruit tarts to decadent chocolate bread pudding, Extraordinary Desserts is the place to indulge. This place is also great if you want to end the night on a good note or if you really want to impress your bagel.
How to get there: From I-5, get onto the 805 South, and then take CA-163 South heading toward downtown. Get off on the University Ave. exit and merge onto 6th Ave. Turn right on Palm St. and take the first right on 5th Ave. Your destination will be on the right. (note: This is the location near Balboa Park)
The View: There really isn’t a view from the restaurant, but it is close to beautiful Balboa Park. You and your date could take an evening stroll together to end the night perfectly.

Creative Date Ideas in SF: For the Lazy, For the Fun, and For the Active

July 17, 2013/in SF /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Catherine Nguyen

Hey SF Bagels,
Although summer in SF isn’t exactly 85 degrees and sunshine, we got 3 creative date ideas in SF for how to make the most of the great outdoors and the (lack thereof) of sunshine.
the great outdoors
For the Lazy: Beach it Out
If you’re feeling lazy and want to soak up some rays for a hot summer tan, take your date out to a nearby beach!
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk offers lots of live entertainment, fun rides, and of course funnel cakes to fulfill your every beach desire. Only an hour away, Santa Cruz is always bustling with sunny weather and good eats nearby.
the great outdoors
Of course, if you’re feeling even more lazy and don’t want to make the commute, the Pacific Ocean is right around the corner. Check out Bakers’ Beach off the Presidio western shoreline, where you can get a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Pro tip: the northern section of Baker Beach is arguably “frequented by clothing-optional sunbathers” or in other words, may be a nude beach, so be prepared (or not).
the great outdoors

For the Fun: Bike Around the City
If you’re feeling adventurously fun, rent a bike for the day and hit up one of SF’s many bike trails for a scenic and romantic ride away.
We personally recommend the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito bike route. Starting from Fort Mason, this route crosses the Golden Gate Bridge, where you can make a pit stop in Sausalito, a gorgeous waterfront, urban town. Rent your bike from Blazing Saddles where they have locations in both SF and Sausalito, so if your adventurous-ness wears out, you can ride the ferry back to Pier 41.
the great outdoors
Still feeling wary? Use SF Bicycle Coalition to plan your next trip safely and soundly!

For the Active: Hiking
You can easily find that picture-perfect view of San Francisco along the many trails of the Marin Headlands. What’s also great  about hiking here is that some of the trails lead to Kirby Cove, which is another beach with a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
But if you’re looking for more of a nature trail check out the Muir Woods National Monument. This destination is surrounded by tall redwood trees, and the trails are divided by how long they take to complete (i.e. half an hour or one hour).

the great outdoors

Only at the Marin Headlands can you get a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco.

Hey Bagels,
We’re close to wrapping up Throwback Week with a trip to the nation’s capitol, Washington DC. So far we’ve been to San Francisco, NYC, Boston, and LA. Here are some creative date ideas for you and your bagel if the line for the White House tour is too long.
Open City: With breakfast served all day and other delicious choices this DC diner is one to definitely make a trip to. It also has outdoor seating so be sure to take advantage of the summer weather while it lasts!

Anyone order the French Toast?

The Family Drive-In Theatre: You can catch the latest summer movies at the The Family Drive-In Theatre, and the best part is there’s a double feature every night every Sunday through Thursday. Because there are so many new movies coming out this summer, movies showing at the drive-in vary from week to week. You can check which showtimes and purchase tickets here.

The Family Theatre shows all the of the newest movies.

Fort Myer Bowling Center: looking for some old fashioned fun? Why not bowling? The upside to this spot is that shoe rentals are $2 and games are $3 each. But the downside it is on a military base and you have to go through a security checkpoint to get in. Not to worry though, the journey is well worth it because it is one of the best bowling alleys around.

The bowling center at Fort Myer is also known as Strike Zone.

"Back in My Day…": Creative Date Ideas in Boston

July 10, 2013/in Boston /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Bronson Farr

Hey Bagels!

We’re still celebrating Throwback Week! So far we’ve covered LA, San Francisco and NYC. Now we’re in Boston searching for spots where your parents, and maybe even your grandparents, used to go out on dates. We managed to find 3 creative date ideas that will definitely create some memories.

Mendon Twin Drive-In: Want to watch the newest movies, but don’t want to deal with the large crowds at the theaters? Well drive on over to the Mendon Drive-In for that old-school-drive-in-movie feel. Although there are only two screens at this theater, each night there is a double feature for each screen. This place is open 7 days a week through Labor Day so be sure to check it out before they close for winter!

creative date ideas

The Mendon Twin Drive-In is still a popular spot to catch a double feature

Toscanini’s Ice Cream: This creamery may not have that vintage feel, but going out for ice cream is always a classic date. While they usually have about 40 flavors in regular rotation, Toscanini’s has a whopping 60 core flavors; not including the hundreds of other flavors they have made over the years. Patrons can also purchase 3 gallons of their favorite flavor!

creative date ideas

Why settle for 31 flavors when you can try 40 that are homemade?

Underground Hip Hop dot com (UGHH)
: If you’re looking for some old hip-hop or rap vinyl to add to your collection this is the place to be. From Jay-Z’s newest album to some of the Notorious B.I.G.’s early work, this store has it all and more. So grab your turntables and headphones and get ready for a great time.
