5 Tips to Take Your Chats to the Next Level

July 24, 2019/in Blog, CMB 101 /by CMB

A note from David Osteen, in-house data scientist at CMB

Picture this: You open your Coffee Meets Bagel app and see you’ve made a new connection!

First comes that rush of exhilaration: you’re imagining all of the rom-com scenarios that are sure to unfold. But then, your brain busts in with a dose of negativity. Remember those matches that fizzled out with lackluster, forgettable messages?

As a data scientist at Coffee Meets Bagel, I’ve seen too many chats meet an untimely end due to an inability to convert a match into a fun, meaningful conversation. So, what gives? Why do some chats sizzle and other chats fizzle?

My team and I started looking into some of the chat data to answer this question. Here are my insider tips for turning your chats into conversations that lead to great dates.

1. Check Small Talk at the Door

Let’s be real, no one enjoys small talk. You grin and bear it at office Christmas parties. Why should you willingly engage in it when it comes to dating? Your time is more valuable than that.

Start your chat off with a bang by asking a question you genuinely want to hear the answer to. Say you’re a comic fanatic, ask who they think the best Avenger character is and share yours too. (It’s Captain Marvel, obviously.)

Feel weird about diving right into a chat with a question? Make sure to fill out your Icebreakers in your profile so we can help get things going.

Here are some other questions to try out:

💬 What book are you reading?

💬 Have you picked up any new hobbies lately?

💬 What video games are currently obsessed with? (We should play together!)

Make sure you provide your own answer to your question, too, to help spark conversation. And, while my examples are a good start, feel free to get creative.

2. Don’t Wait to Break the Ice

If someone’s profile is interesting enough to earn your “like,” why wait to have a conversation? Procrastination may or may not be your middle name, but that won’t fly here.

It’s best to strike while the iron — or should I say bagel — is hot. Chats started on Coffee Meets Bagel within three hours of matching are 52% more likely to get a response!

Once you get rolling, don’t drag it out. Nothing kills conversation momentum quite like a reply that takes 16 hours. By that point, you don’t even remember what you were talking about without rereading past messages.

And plus, if conversation is flowing and you’re both feeling a spark, you’re that much closer to a great first date.

3. Don’t Be Scared to Make the First Move

For the love of all that is good, don’t let outdated, cliche dating rules lead you astray.

Guys should make the first move? Nope. You liked them first, so now it’s their turn? Forget it. Initiating the conversation gives away your power? Absolutely not!

My advice here is very simple but also very important: It’s just a chat. Don’t put so much pressure on it.

Reaching out first isn’t equivalent to a marriage proposal, it just means that you matched and would like to know more — it’s as simple as that. If you allow those misguided notions to dictate your dating life, you might miss out on promising opportunities.

4. Give Phone Calls a Chance

In today’s day and age, most of us freeze up when our phone actually rings. But when it comes to getting to know someone, a good ol’ fashioned phone call is invaluable.

That’s right, I’m suggesting that you pick up the phone, dial an actual number and talk on the phone like it’s 2005. Not only will you give your poor thumbs a break (hello, carpal tunnel!) but a phone call is a great change of pace. It can make you stand out and give you a better read on someone.

With online chatting and texting, people have time to craft the perfect, cool response. But, you can’t really get a feel for someone’s personality until you have a real life conversation. Chatting on the phone will reduce the chances you’ll be surprised within the first five minutes of meeting a bagel they just aren’t what you thought they’d be.

5. Take the Next Step or Wrap It Up

After a few exchanges, you should have a pretty good idea of whether you’d like to take this conversation face-to-face.

So if you want to have a virtual meetup with your bagel, don’t overthink it — just ask! This calls back to not putting so much pressure on the situation. If they say yes, congrats! If they say no, it’s all good — at least they were honest and didn’t waste your time with a date that would lead to nothing.

On the flip side, if you’ve been chatting but the spark isn’t happening, be honest and respectfully end the conversation. And I can’t stress this enough: don’t ghost!

Here are some ways to end a lackluster chat or politely decline an invite to meet:

💬 “I enjoyed chatting but I don’t think we’re a good fit. Thanks for the conversation and I hope you meet your right match!”

💬 “I enjoyed our convo but I don’t feel the connection. It was great meeting you and good luck with future bagels!”

Bonus: Keep an Eye Out for Scams

You’re here to meet people and have a good time, so don’t let the scammers of the world get in your way. While CMB does have an internal tool that runs 24/7 to combat scammers, it isn’t perfect (yet).

So, protect yourself, and your identity, by keeping personal information like phone numbers and email addresses to yourself until you are 100% comfortable.

Trust your gut and be aware of suspicious behavior, like someone pushing you to meet before you’re ready or asking for money. If it looks like a scam and walks like a scam… you get the picture. Report these people right away.

For more info on online dating safety, be sure to peek at our guide: “Online Dating Safety Tips: 5 Ways to Spot a Scammer.”

Time to Get Chatty

Now that you’re armed with these pro tips, it’s time to put them to the test and get to chatting with your matches! Every time you match with a bagel, a new convo with an icebreaker will appear in “Chats.” To get there, open your app and simply tap “Chats” in the bottom right corner.

Chatting isn’t meant to be hard, you just have to get out of your own head and be genuine. Keep my tips in mind and you’re sure to find yourself lost in conversation without breaking a sweat. Happy matching!

CMB Dawoon Kang Reddit AMA

Did You Miss Dawoon Kang’s Reddit ‘AMA’? Here’s 7 of the Best Q+A

January 24, 2019/in CMB Says, From the founders, Product, Tips, Tips on CMB /by Paige Butterfield

Coffee Meets Bagel’s very own Co-Founder and -CEO Dawoon Kang braved Reddit’s r/IamA January 22 to answer the questions on everyone’s mind: from tips for online dating, to where the name “Coffee Meets Bagel” came from. (And seriously, who’s the coffee? Who’s the bagel?!)

There are a lot of juicy questions and answers to sift through, so we’ve organized them and picked out the best. Here’s what happened after Dawoon Kang said, “Ask me anything!”

Tips for Online Dating

1. How Can I Increase My Match Rates on CMB?

Low match-rates are a big online dating frustration for many. However, CMB’s Dawoon has some helpful advice when it comes to making your profile more effective.

“When you answer profile questions, speak from your heart and talk honestly about what’s important about you and what you’re looking for in a date,” she said.

That’s because, Dawoon sums up, longer profiles are better than short ones. For more tips for online dating, skim Dawoon’s Reddit answer below.

Reddit: increase match rates

2. Is Dating Sunday Really the Busiest Day for Online Dating?

Dating Sunday isn’t just folklore! In fact, the co-founder says Dating Sunday “was so big for us that it actually broke a record — it was the biggest chat day in CMB history!” The next most-popular day for chatty Cathys? The following Sunday, January 13.

But if you forgot to log in during peak dates, don’t worry. All of January is a popular time for Coffee Meets Bagel, so you still have time to connect.

3. What Are Some of the Best Online Dating Icebreakers?

In person, singles are forced to think quickly when it comes to breaking the ices. But, online? While more time to perfect a great opening line sounds pleasant, it can also be overwhelming. Should you tell a joke? Use a pick up line? Ask a question about something on their profile?

Dawoon responded with enthusiasm. “Jokes are GREAT,” She said. “Awesome to make someone laugh!” Secondarily, commenting on someone’s profile is also a great way to hit it off. Just be sure not to be generic.

Once, Dawoon said, she used one of her favorite quotes from one of her favorite books, “The Alchemist,” on her profile. “I loved it when someone tried to guess where it was from,” Dawoon said. “It was a great convo starter.”Reddit: online dating icebreakers

4. What’s Dawoon’s Online Dating Philosophy?

Something Dawoon has said in the past is that, “It’s not about getting as many Likes as possible — it’s about getting one right like.” And, Dawoon suggested, that’s why Coffee Meets Bagel is razor-focused on curating limited quality matches instead of an endless pool of singles.

Another Redditor, “usctrojan415” gives further insight: “You don’t date online…at the end of the day you need to be able to transition offline effectively.”

Coffee Meets Bagel: How It Works and More

5. How Does ‘Discover’ Work?

To new community members, how Coffee Meets Bagel works might seem confusing. However, the platform is simple (even if our algorithm is complex)! Coffee Meets Bagel’s main draw is the “Suggested” section, where CMB’ers receive limited curated matches daily. The section is 100 percent free to use and to Like people.

But when CMB’ers want to search for extra Bagels using their own Advanced Filters (such as age, location, and education), they can choose to use the “Discover” section, too. In this section, it’s free to browse, but community members must use Beans or have a special subscription to Like people.

As “happyaboutlife100” puts it below, “[Discover] was meant as just an adjunctive part of CMB – i.e. the cherry on top.”

Reddit: how does discover work on Coffee Meets Bagel

6. What’s CMB Doing About Online Dating Bots?

Scammers and bots are the reality for many dating apps, and Coffee Meets Bagel is no exception. When Redditor “superken00” asked what CMB’s strategy was for dealing with these fake profiles, Dawoon responded candidly. Take a look!

Reddit: online dating bots

7. What Does the Name ‘Coffee Meets Bagel’ Mean?

Thank you, “dl2ew” for asking a question everyone is ready to get to the bottom of! What does the name “Coffee Meets Bagel” mean, and where did it come from? Is the premise that you’re supposed to meet up for coffee? Dawoon gives a three-fold answer — see what she says in the screen-cap.

Reddit: What does coffee meets bagel mean

OK — so we didn’t learn who the coffee and who the bagel is on Coffee Meets Bagel. But, perhaps the magic is in the mystery. To see more of Dawoon Kang’s “Best Of” from her Reddit AMA,

10 Things Singles Hate To Hear Around Valentine’s Day

February 11, 2015/in Funny & Videos /by Guest Blogger
The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Dana Middleton
(This post was originally published in January 2014 and is back by popular demand!)

No other time of year is as difficult to be single as on Valentine’s Day. My inbox is flooded with emails on creative date spots, unique gifts, and best restaurants and I am constantly reminded of how I, as a single person, can’t partake in these activities. As for the rest of the 364 days of the year, I have to listen to this nonsense!
Share this post with your attached friends, who keep giving you useless, albeit well-intentioned, dating advice.

10 things singles like me HATE to hear:

1. “You are so good looking and so smart. How are you still single?”

Dating advice for couples
That’s just adding insult upon injury. Despite the fact that I am good looking and smart, I am still single! Thank you for reminding me of that.
2. “You are too picky! If you just lowered the bar, you’d be in a relationship.”
Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends
I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that wanting my date to have a job AND a sense of humor was setting the bar too high. Which one do you recommend I give up on?
3. “You need to get out there more!”
Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

Let’s see: I have a profile on Coffee Meets Bagel, Match, Tinder, OKCupid and a dozen other online dating sites. I chat strangers up at the gym and the grocery store. I have my friends set me up on blind dates.  I go out on Friday & Saturday nights. What else do you want me to do?

4. “So, when are YOU getting married?” (Usually asked at a younger sibling’s or cousin’s wedding)

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

Well, looks like today isn’t MY day. But when it does happen, I promise to send you a save-the-date at least 6 months in advance.

5. “It will happen when you least expect it.”

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

Really? It sounds like something I read in a fortune cookie. Nothing has changed whether I expected or not. I’ve been “least expecting it” for like the past 12 months.

6. “Use this time to work on yourself.”

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

I go to the gym. I get plenty of sleep. I eat organic, vegan & gluten free.  I have hiked Machu Picchu and Kilimanjaro. I have learned 3 new languages in the past year. I’ve taken cooking classes. What else do I need to work on?

7. “I envy you. I wish I was still single.”

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

No, you don’t. You say that once a year when at someone’s bachelor/bachelorette party, you feel guilty about getting drunk and leaving your significant other at home. Every other night, you love that you have someone to cook a meal with, drag to a terrible movie, go on long strolls in the park or pretty much anything else that single people have to do alone.

8. “It’s his/her loss.”

Dating advice for couples

Actually it isn’t. He/she was really good looking, smart, funny, interesting, considerate and engaging. So it’s really my loss.

9. “You just have to hope and be optimistic.”

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

What does that even mean? Sounds more like some campaign slogan than dating advice.

10. “He/she is out there for you. You just have to look harder.”

Dating Tips from Singles to their Attached Friends

Sounds like I gotta go on a “needle in the haystack” finding mission. Also, see #3 above. I have pretty much turned every haystack upside down looking for this needle.

We Tested 11 Different Male Profile Pictures and This Is What Happened

April 28, 2014/in For Him /by Guest Blogger

I’m at it again! Putting my own online dating reputation at risk for the better good of online daters everywhere, in particular our own users. My previous post was based on improving the way men message women. This time I tested out 11 different types of profile pictures to understand which profile pictures are the most successful for men to use on their online dating profiles. I based the success of each type of profile picture by how many responses each one received when I would message women. The styles are listed from most to least successful. For example, smiling in a basic setting received the most responses while taking a selfie proved to be the worst option. Of course everyone will experience different outcomes but this should give men a good idea of what their main online dating profile picture should be.

1. Smiling

online dating tips for men

The classic smile received the most responses and was the outright winner!

2. Animal Pic

Having an animal picture is said to display a passion for another living entity, which women find quite attractive.

3. Outdoors

Showing that you’re active is a way to display both ourselves and our interests.

4. Not Smiling

online dating tips for men

Not smiling may turn some women away but at least you aren’t doing anything to embarrass yourself.

5. Picture with girl

Taking a picture with a girl is hit or miss with many women. On one hand it shows what we look like with a girl, on the other hand, why put a women on our online dating profile in the first place? Do you bring sand to the beach?

6. Shirt off

online dating tips for men

It depends on the type of women we want to attract. If we want something long-term then we should keep our shirts on, at least on the Internet that is.

7. Group Picture

First off, if there is more than one guy then it may confuse the viewer of the profile. Also if there are multiple girls it could send the wrong message.

8. Costume

online dating tips for men

Whoever looks at your profile wants to see you, not what you look like in something you wear once a year. Costume pictures are okay as secondary images but not for the main profile image.

9. Eating

10. Cropped

Thoughts that go through the mind of someone who views a photo that is cropped: “Are they hiding something? Who else was in the picture? Do they honestly not have something else to use? They suck at cropping…”

11. Selfie

online dating tips for men

One of the number one complaints people have about online dating profiles has something to do with people posting selfies.

Don’t lead with your abs: 5 common mistakes to avoid on your online dating profile

October 22, 2013/in Tips on CMB /by Guest Blogger

Hey Bagels! As the Chief Marketing Officer at Coffee Meets Bagel, I see a lot of male profile pictures.  To be honest, they aren’t always the best. So guys of Coffee Meets Bagel, follow these 5 important online dating tips to when choosing your photos and it will quickly turn your profile into a LIKE from a Pass!
1. No shirtless pictures
Shirtless picture
Just because it worked for Bruce Lee, it doesn’t mean that it works for you. Believe it or not, we can still tell you work out with a shirt on.
2. No selfies
Picture2
Regardless whether you are shirtless or not, selfies are just a don’t.  We will think that all you do is sit at home and snap pictures of yourself on your mobile device, and it doesn’t convince us that you are an interesting or adventurous guy.
3. Don’t include other girls in the picture
Picture3
We obviously don’t mind that you have female friends, but sometimes we can’t tell if she your sister or your ex-girlfriend.  So please learn to use the “crop” feature on your phone or photo editor.
4. Resist holding a baby in a picture
Picture4
We may think babies are cute, but we have no way of knowing who the father is. Is it your son or your nephew? We have no idea and we’d rather not guess. If you want to make us think you’re cute: try posing with your dog instead!
5. No group shots, sunglasses, baseball caps

boys-night-out
Don’t get us wrong: we love that you are social and have friends. We love your Ray-Ban Aviators as much as you do. But when you post multiple pictures of yourself and your ten closest dude friends, or your face covered up, we just can’t tell which one you are and what you look like.
And finally, SMILE!
Picture11
That’s not a don’t – that’s a DO! Girls are attracted to happy, excited & positive guys so save your serious professional shots for your LinkedIn profile. A picture of your with a smile conveys that you are warm, friendly and open to meeting you new people – which is exactly what Coffee Meets Bagel is about!

Your Profile Picture is Worth a Thousand Words…What Are They?

July 20, 2013/in Funny & Videos /by Guest Blogger

In honor of our new CMB mobile app, we are doing a series of posts focused on mobile phones and the best dating apps. Today, we’re breaking down the types of profile pictures of guys you find on a mobile dating app. Read on!

Everyone knows first impressions are important. They are even more so with the increasing popularity of mobile dating apps and decreasing attention spans. Your profile picture can find you your soulmate or leave you in the dust of missed connections and abandoned Bagels. Dating coaches give endless advice on how to choose the perfect photo to upload. Find the most flattering lighting, look directly at the camera, don’t look directly at the camera, smile! With all the advice out there, it’s hard to keep track. No matter which picture you choose to upload, remember that a picture is a worth a thousand words. Let’s take a look at what those words are.

Holding puppy/baby/cute object

He knows puppies and babies are women magnets and is using that fact to his advantage. Even so, who can resist a man being smothered by puppy kisses?

On stage at a tech conference delivering a keynote

He’s founding his own startup or funding other people’s. You know that he’s techy, nerdy, and has serious net worth. What’s not to love?

Professional glamour shot

Hope that he did this in an ironic way to be funny. Complete with props and poses that attempt to be sexy and mysterious…he’s either a goofball or way too into himself.

Group photo of his office softball team

You know he’s social, has at least that many friends, and is fit enough to lift a bat. Just make sure you’re looking at the right guy!

Shirtless selfie

The only time a shirtless profile picture is acceptable is if he is at the beach/pool/body of water (the toilet doesn’t count). Pass!

So there you have it. Five types of guys you meet through dating apps, solely based on their profile pictures. Which one are you?
