any good news?

April 23, 2012/in CMB Says, CMB Updates, Uncategorized /by CMB

I’m gonna crack a big secret to you guys. I myself am a member of Coffee Meets Bagel and have been enjoying my daily Bagels. I do not have access to any of our members’ information and am just contributing to this blog, so no worries, there aren’t any unfairness going on ;)

Many of my friends are using Coffee Meets Bagel and I want to share some stories with all of you. One of my friends immediately went on a first date with her Bagel after exchanging some text messages. Her Bagel was a total opposite from her usual type, but she “LIKED” him and went on a date with an open mind. Guess where they are just a 6 weeks later? They’re still dating and both say they can see it develop into something more serious.

Some other friends of mine went out on the date with the Bagel but didn’t find any romantic chemistry with the Bagel. BUT! they remain as friends hang out time to time. Some others found good networking through CMB.

CMB was made for singles to find love, but hey it doesn’t always have to be that way! We’re all people in New York trying to meet new and interesting people. So either it be romantic or not just try it out- go out and date!

Dine OUT on the streets?

Either it be for lunch because you don’t have time to sit down and have a proper meal, or because you’re new to the city and think having food on the streets is just weird, going to New York City’s Food Truck Rally is a fun place to go on a Sunday. Many of the best food trucks are coming to Prospect Park so people can sample their treats. I personally am going to go because I love their delicious food, fast service, and reasonable prices. However I always have the same food from the same truck. This is a chance for me and you to explore other options!

Food trucks scheduled to be at the rally TODAY are:

Big D’s Grub
Coolhaus
Cupcake Crew
Eddie’s Pizza Truck
Frites n Meats
Gorilla Cheese
Kelvin Natural Slush
Kimchi Taco Truck
Mexicue
Milk Truck
Pera Turkish Tacos
Red Hook Lobster Truck
Rickshaw Dumpling Truck
Valducci’s Original Pizza
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
Wafels & Dinges
I’m not going to say which one, but I already see 3 of my FAVORITE trucks. So check it out today!

GET OUT OF YOUR APARTMENT!

Did everybody have a good time outdoors over the weekend? Having a picnic at Central Park, biking along the West Side, or even going to Battery Park to just get away from the city… these are the thing we do on the weekends. During the week you can still spend some time outside after work, but you’ll probably want a beer to get your mind off of that excel spreadsheet. I prefer going to meatpacking during the week rather than the weekend- it’s getting a tad too Jersey Shore-esque (just my opinion). Standard’s Biergarten is the go-to place for a glass of beer or even a little more than that.

WHERE: The Standard’s Biergarten (848 Washington Street between 13th St. and Little W 12th St.)

WHEN: Open from 4pm-12am Monday-Thursday, 4pm-1am on Friday, noon-1am on Saturday, noon-12am on Sunday

This Festival is more than screening films with panels and receptions where people can engage in conversations and learn more about the Latin film industry. In a 11 day span, films from 13 countries in different genres- thriller, comedy, drama and even documentary.

JAMES FRANCO…HE’S HERE!

You’ve seen him on the big screen and if you were lucky caught him in between classes near NYU. Franco is an actor, artist, and also an author with his second book ready for us. In 2010 he had his first solo exhibit Dangerous Book Four Boys, a mixed media event. His second book is titled the same and it brings the entire exhibit into one piece and lays it down in one book. You can purchase the book to attend the event to see and hear from Franco. Start your weekend with Franco— done.

WHAT: James Franco, The Dangerous Book Four Boys

WHEN: Friday April 13

WHERE: Strand Bookstore (828 Broadway between 12th and 13th Streets)

More info to buy book or entrance to event

Zine? Huh?

When I first saw this I went “huh?” for a second too. According to the Anchor Archive Zine Library, “Zines are self-published magazines made outside of mainstream press and media, by all kinds of people about all kinds of things.” So if it’s a Zine Fest, I can imagine bunch of fun, creative, dynamic and colorful people gather. This is the first of an annual gathering of zine lovers and creators. It’s expecting more than 60 writers and artists to share their illustrations, writings, photography and any other work they want to show the world.

WHAT: BROOKLYN ZINE FEST

WHERE: Public Assembly (70 North 6th St.)

WHEN: Sunday April 15, 2012

We're not your ordinary "Online Dating Site"

April 9, 2012/in CMB Says, From the founders, Uncategorized /by CMB

The dating service industry is worth more than $2 billion and is constantly growing. Yet the stigma attached to the word “online dating” never seems to diminish.

There are some good points made by those who disapprove online dating. Here is an article that lays out why online dating is a mis in providing people with chances for true romance, mainly based off an interview with Eli Finkel, an associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University.

Negativo

1. Online dating sites pours out TOO MANY profiles of people that lack information, and you end up “shopping” for a future lover
2. Questions the accuracy and reliability of the algorithm online dating sites are using, and believes the algorithm does not produce any better results than meeting someone in random.

I think Finkel has a point here. Coming through endless lists of profiles that may or may not come with long essays about their lives and personalities (self-reflected…i really question how accurate that is in some cases) can get nauseating and time consuming. It’s already off to a bad start when you feel drained even in the process of getting started before the actual date.

That’s why we pride so much in what we are and what we do. Coffee Meets Bagel cuts down the time and work our members have to do. We too strongly disapprove the idea of “shopping” for your potential romantic interest and even more so of being drained out and discouraged during the process of meeting someone.

As for the algorithm aspect, yes people may say they want one thing and indicate that on their profiles but when they are matched with the person with all the points they may not have chemistry and have nothing to do with each other. Yet we added something more to just what people put on their profiles. CMB connects people through their mutual friends, helping them to have a better judgement on what the person is like and automatically gets rid of that fear factor, “what is this dude is creeper..I don’t even know him.”

That is why we would rather be called as an online social gaming platform where people meet, build their network, and hopefully find love on the way. We’re not an “online dating site” where people shop for love. We make it happen by connecting people quickly as possible and allowing them to SPEAK  and COMMUNICATE with each other to find out who they really are. No lingering behind profiles and guessing.

So at the end of the day I guess Finkel and CMB do come to the same conclusion. “There’s no better way to figure out whether you’re compatible with somebody than talking to them over a cup of coffee,” said Finkel and we absolutely agree. Hence our name, Coffee Meets Bagel :)

Some Facts of Online Dating

March 29, 2012/in CMB Says, Date Tips /by CMB

Sorry about this HUGE photo but keep on reading!

The word “online dating” can stir up very different responses. It is a booming business, yet some are still afraid to admit they are online dating and some are afraid to even start because of horror stories.

I thought these facts were interesting and relevant for all of us. (Seeing how both women and men say they slightly thinner or taller than they actually are made me chuckle a little to myself.)

Coffee Meets Bagel pride ourselves in being an online social gaming site where we introduce and make matches online but by bringing in the “introduced through a friend or family member”. This really differentiates us from other online dating sites and we hope our members are having a different experience.

When you’re on the fence about your Bagel, be open-minded and give it a shot! You never know, he/she might be extraordinary and attractive when you meet in person ;)

Get Real with Beer and Sausages

March 28, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

Who said beer and meat are only for men? A girl’s gotta have sausages and hamburgers too!

We love to go to DBGB with a group of friends but is chic place for couples to go on a date as well. All of it’s sausages are to die for so we recommend in getting at least 2 different types with your date. Also get an order of the frenchie hamburger, you can’t go wrong with it. DBGB also carries more than 20 types of beer on tap and over 50 bottled beer.

Daniel Boulud never disappoints foodies and DBGB is becoming New Yorkers favorite spot for some beer and artery clogging deliciousness.
