Dating Statistics: Does your school matter when it comes to dating?

August 29, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

Statistics behind love is back! This time our Chief Data Scientist sifted through over 68,000 matches we made so far to answer the question: Does school matter when it comes to dating?

YES! After analyzing the LIKE or PASS choices of members from the 10 most represented schools on Coffee Meets Bagel, we realized the answer is Yes. A lot, actually, especially for University of Michigan & Stanford kids. They were 17% and 13% more likely to LIKE Bagels from their Alma Mater vs. non-Alma Mater Bagels. Ironically, they also turn out to be two of the most popular schools, being LIKED by others 42% & 41% of the time! I guess some things never change: Popular kids still prefer to hang out within their own groups!

Some other random details we found:

·Male & Female? Preference towards their Alma Mater was consistently displayed by both male and female.

·School with most popular Gents:  Yale gents who were LIKED 39%

·School with most popular Ladies:  Univ. of Michigan followed by Stanford ladies. They were both LIKED close to 50% of the time!

Dating Statistics: Attractiveness across the 5 boroughs of New York

August 26, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

We wanted to dedicate this week’s post to something very New York and thought it would be fun to compare some statistics across the 5 boroughs of New York (plus our friendly neighborhood, NJ). Specifically, how does our members’ popularity differ by neighborhood?
Here is what we’ve found (Unfortunately we did not have enough representation from the Bronx and Staten Island so those two were excluded).
Attractiveness score was the highest in Manhattan. This was not surprising, given that Manhattan make up the largest percentage of our member base, and as a Manhattaner myself, crossing the bridge to meet someone for a date is, of course, unthinkable(!). What’s more interesting to me was the attractiveness score within each of the boroughs.
Manhattan: Midtown/Upper Eastside turns out to be the attractive neighborhood within Manhattan. (too bad I live on the west side) Financial District + Harlem turned out the least popular, perhaps due to their remote(?) locations. A question for you: Does it matter where your date lives, as long as they reside within Manhattan? I guess another question is whether people make judgement on others based on their zipcode.

Queens: Sunnyside scored the most popular within Queens. The least popular was…Astoria.

Brooklyn: Fort Greene & Park Slope area scored the highest within Brooklyn. Parts of Williamsburg turned out to be the least popular.

Finally! New Jersey: Surprisingly despite the disadvantage in location, Fort Lee & Engelwood turned out to be quite popular… I hear that there is a large % of Koreans living in Fort Lee. :)

What might be an interesting next step would be to correlate this with other demographic data, such as income or education level by neighborhood to see if there are any relationships. But that’s all for now folks! We would love to hear your comments as always.
Have a great weekend.

Dating Statistics: You may not be an Olympian but playing sports can still make you more desirable!

August 7, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

How athletic are singles in NYC & Boston area? What is the most popular sports among them? Lastly, which sports make you the most desirable?

The London Olympics 2012 is coming to an end soon but to continue the fun, Coffee Meets Bagel analyzed 68,000+ matches to uncover the relationship between love & sports.

1. How athletic are singles in the NYC & Boston?

  • About a third of the singles, both men and women, mentioned at least one sport on their profiles.
  • Singles’ athletic level was similar across all age groups.
  • Contrary to the “nerd” stereotype, more educated members seemed more athletic.
  • Catholic/Christians were the most interested in sports, while Muslims were the least.

2. What is the most popular sports?

  • Men and women mentioned the same sports 70% of the time.
  • But! The top 10 rankings were totally different. The top three sports for women were running, yoga, and hiking while guys mentioned running, tennis, and basketball.

3. Which sport makes you the most desirable???

  • So, which sports should you play to get more dates? If you are a woman, golf makes you 41% more desirable by men vs. those who don’t play, followed by skiing (16% more) and working out (14% more). Male football players (or football fans) are 38% more likely to get LIKED than men who are not, followed by cyclist (22% more) and basketball players (19% more).

Happy Olympics everyone!
*Special thanks to our members John & Krizia for the awesome findings

What Having A PhD Means For Your Love Life

January 12, 2010/in Date Stats /by Guest Blogger

Here at CMB, we know that our users are intelligent — you’re smart enough to have chosen us after all! Joking aside, what you may not know is that we are indeed, statistically, a favorite among highly educated professionals. Believe it or not, over 35% of our member base has a master’s degree or higher. Compare that to the national average of people with master’s degrees or higher at 12%, you guys are a bunch of smarty pants!

Naturally, we were curious to see if having a graduate degree, or other further degree, has any correlation to a member’s attractiveness and preferences. We looked at over 20 million matches and here’s what we found. Let’s start with the dudes.

Men & Their PhDs

MA Dating

Sorry dudes, looks like your PhD isn’t helping you out much in the dating world. It could be worse though, but you also deserve mad props for being the second most open to LIKEing your bagels. What it looks like is that more general degrees (i.e., PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s) are getting liked the least, which I think might have to do with their lack of specificity — you could be studying anything from dance to chemical engineering, so your area of study is probably more important to bagels than your level of degree. So keep on trucking, keep on learning, and hang that degree with pride!

Women & Their PhDs

MA Dating

As always, men and women are as different as Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, and our study proves no exception. Men didn’t seem too hot for the women holding professional or other higher degrees; in fact, they preferred ladies who only have their bachelor’s degree!!! So essentially ladies, all of those extra years of school you endured were totally useless as far as your dating life is concerned. The good news is, we don’t think this is a sign that men don’t find high achieving women attractive — after all, female MDs were the second most liked. My hypothesis? Maybe the issue here is more related to age. Naturally, if you have a PhD, you’ve been in school for quite a while and are thus significantly older than a recent undergrad graduate, and you know how those men love those younger women — I’m totally rolling my eyes right now.

What’s interesting is that women holding only undergrad degrees were also the pickiest, followed again by MDs. I guess popular groups just have a sixth sense about these things and know they can be picky, but what fun is being picky? By being as open as you are (third least picky!) you guys are meeting a more diverse group of guys to banter about your dissertation with, so keep it up and don’t let the haters get you down.

What’s Trending In The Profiles Of Bagels With PhDs?

Realizing that the type of degree someone holds has a clear impact on their attractiveness, I was curious if there is a distinctive way people with different degrees present themselves on their profiles. Are there words or phrases that are commonly used amongst bagels with PhDs?
We loved how OkCupid conducted a similar study (but with race), so we emulated their methodology in this study. We looked at all of our users who have a PhD’s profiles and isolated words and phrases in their profiles that were used most frequently. The results? Check out the chart below.
Terrell W. Orr
FYI – For those of you who are not familiar with Coffee Meets Bagel, here’s an example of what a member’s profile looks like on Coffee Meets Bagel (this is mine). The words used in the last three sections of the profile are what we used for this study.

PhD Dating

Our members with PhDs mentioned a bunch of words relating to academics, which makes sense. I mean, you decide to dedicate your life to studying one specific thing, it’s probably important enough to you to mention it in your dating profile, no? But you guys also have a bunch of totally random shared interests: croissants? squash? wizards?!? Also, does anyone know what the heck “flipping” is? Urban Dictionary is telling me it’s either a term related to drug use, a slang word for “doing the deed,” or the act of stealing the contents of someone’s backpack. Something tells me that’s not what you doctors of academia are talking about.

We can’t be totally sure what’s going on here, but it sure is interesting. Overall, it looks like men are into ladies with less smarts than them (frowny face), and women lust after doctors and businessmen. What do you think? Leave us comments, especially if you have any idea what the heck “flipping” means.

So You Passed The Bar Exam, But Do You Pass The Bar In The Dating Game?

Men & Their JD Degrees

MA Dating

The judicial system is (at least supposed to be) all about equality and fairness, right? So it only makes sense that you JD bagels fall right in the middle of both being LIKED and how picky you are. Equality for the win! While you’re third to doctor and business bagels, you’re still killing it ahead of PhD, bachelor’s and master’s holders — it looks like the ladies are partial to men with specific professions, and you guys are equally as picky. Keep up the equality gents!

Women & Their JD Degrees

MA Dating

Not too different from the men, you lady lawyers are situated right in the middle of all the other degrees, a continuation of my hypothesis about lawyers being fair and equal. However, you gals surpassed female MBA holders, where as ladies preferred MBA men ahead of JD guys. You also probably noticed that men are particularly hot for women who only have their bachelor’s. The good news is, we don’t think this is a sign that men don’t find high achieving women attractive — after all, female MDs were the second most liked. My hypothesis? Maybe the issue here is more related to age. Naturally, a woman with a JD or PhD will be older than a recent undergrad graduate, and you know how those men love those younger women — I’m totally rolling my eyes right now.

What’s Trending In The Profiles Of Bagels With JDs?

Realizing that the type of degree someone holds has a clear impact on their attractiveness, I was curious if there is a distinctive way people with different degrees present themselves on their profiles. Are there words or phrases that are commonly used amongst bagels with JDs?
We loved how OkCupid conducted a similar study (but with race), so we emulated their methodology in this study. We looked at all of our users who have JD’s profiles and isolated words and phrases in their profiles that were used most frequently. The results? Check out the chart below.

Lawyers Dating

The trend of alluding to your profession/degree in your profile was recurring for each degree, but you law degree holders really take the cake. “Lawyer,” “law,” “justice,” “rights,” “legal,” even “oxford commas,” the list goes on. But according to our data, Lawyers are also raging meat lovers. I certainly can’t picture any lawyers I know on a trapeze or wearing jorts, but apparently those are things you guys are into. I’m only just a tad bit concerned about the trends of “whipping” and “bleeding.” I know lawyers can be scary, but that just brings it to a whole new level. Please don’t hurt yourselves (or anyone else).

We can’t be totally sure what’s going on here, but it sure is interesting. Overall, it looks like men are into women with less smarts than them (frowny face), and women lust after doctors and businessmen. What do you think?

Here’s What All Those Years In Medical School Did For Your Love Life

Men & Their MDs

MA Dating

DING DING DING! We have a winner! Looks like a lot of ladies are looking for their very own McDreamy, aren’t you lucky! Lucky and well-deserving, where would we be without doctor’s? Not only have the many, many years you spent in school helped tons of people stay and get healthy, you now know that it’s surely helping your dating life. You might also be the pickiest of the bunch, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with a man who knows what he wants.

Women & Their MDs

MA Dating

So, while you ladies are loving your male counterparts in the medical field, you’re going to have to settle for second place. Sorry gals, but you’re still kicking butt when it comes to all of the other post-undergrad degrees! It’s kind of nuts that men don’t seem too hot for the women holding professional or other higher degrees — they preferred ladies who only have their bachelor’s degree the most — rest assured your many years in school have still heightened your appeal. My hypothesis about this phenomenon? Maybe the issue here is more related to age. Naturally, a woman with a PhD or MD would be significantly older than a recent undergrad graduate, and you know how those men love those younger women — I’m totally rolling my eyes right now.

I can’t blame you, but note that you’re also the second pickiest of the bunch. You probably don’t have a whole lot of free time to waste on guys who aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, so I understand, but don’t be so picky that you miss out on finding Mr. Right!

What’s Trending In The Profiles Of Bagels With MDs?

Realizing that the type of degree someone holds has a clear impact on their attractiveness, I was curious if there is a distinctive way people with different degrees present themselves on their profiles. Are there words or phrases that are commonly used amongst bagels with JDs? We loved how OkCupid conducted a similar study (but with race), so we emulated their methodology in this study. The words used in the last three sections of the profile are what we used for this study. Doctors Dating

Unsurprisingly, all of the major trends with our doctor bagels revolve around the field of medicine, however we’re wondering if you bagels with MDs are talking about the “scrubs” they wear to work or the TV show. After all, it appears that you docs are quite fond of lounging around watching Glee and Aziz Ansari. I don’t blame you though, you must be exhausted when you finally do have time off; I watch Grey’s Anatomy so I know these things. But, I’m sorry, what’s with “gangsta” and “yo?”

We can’t be totally sure what’s going on here, but it sure is interesting. Overall, it looks like men are into ladies with less smarts than them (frowny face), and women lust after doctors and businessmen. What do you think?

So You Have A Master's Degree, But Are You A Master Of Dating?

January 12, 2010/in Date Stats /by Guest Blogger

Masters Dating

I love how diverse the trending words for the bagels with their masters degrees are. It just goes to show how diverse our users are, and how many topics there are to be passionate about, which makes me smile. From coding to designing to nursing, these bagels must be super creative. There are also apparently a lot of freckle-faced, curly haired masters students. I presume that “flakey” isn’t trending because these masters degree holders are calling themselves flakey, but probably because they don’t like flakey dates. So now you know: don’t be late for your dates of eating pies and playing cricket!

We can’t be totally sure what’s going on here, but it sure is interesting. Overall, it looks like men are into women with less smarts than them (frowny face), and women lust after doctors and businessmen. What do you think?
