iPhone user dating an Android owner? Why your relationship is destined for disaster

August 31, 2013/in Date Stats /by CMB

Hey Bagels! We’ve just launched our own iPhone app! We think it just might be the #BestDatingAppEver. We’re very excited about it so we decided to do a series of articles revolving around mobile apps and cell phones in the dating world. We’d like to start with some science.

Everyone knows that a first impression can make or break a romantic relationship. Does he leave a bad tip? He’s stingy. Got spinach in her teeth? Poor hygiene. Mismatching socks? Well that’s just not classy. We all judge our dates on how they look and act, but what about what they hold in their hands? Specifically, their cell phone. Smartphones these days have apps that can find you a date, track your fitness, and teach you how to cook, but the phone itself reveals more than meets the eye. Does she have an Android phone? According to a study by Hunch, she might just be an uneducated pessimist. No texts for her. Does he have an iPhone? He might be high-maintenance and more likely to text and drive. Watch out on the road. Your date’s phone can provide you with a wealth of information, and you don’t even have to snoop through it.

Hunch’s study examined over 15,000 Hunch users who own a smart phone. Their data suggests that Android users and iPhone users differ on just about every trait available. Above infographic illustrates what it means to date an iPhone girl and an Android guy.

So what does this mean for you? Well, if you’re an iPhone girl, it means you probably shouldn’t date an Android boy. You’re too good for that, hun. If you’re an Android guy, then just don’t tell anyone. Are these recommendations completely serious? Of course they are. We used science.

If My City Was Single: Infographic on Singles in Chicago, LA, DC

March 24, 2013/in Date Stats /by CMB

We’re all a product of our environments and with their fast-paced and immersive lifestyle that goes double for cities.

Which got us thinking: what exactly does the average single look like in your city?

We analyzed CMB member data in our newest cities – Chicago, LA and DC – to bring you the answers. Check out the highlights below:

CHICAGO: It’s a Hell of a Town.

In the Windy City the average single man is tall, white and godless with a penchant for finance while the average single lady is totally in touch with her spiritual side while her other side earns reams of cash in marketing. Can someone say “power couple”?

LA: Hello Holy-Wood!

In LA a whopping 41% of men and women identify as either Christian or Catholic, (I guess that’s why they call it the City of Angels). LA men tend to be in the entertainment business while women once again prefer marketing. Strangely, in a city famous for its tacos, 43% of male singles are white while at 38% the highest percentage of LA women tend to be Asian!

DC: Degree City?

With 43% of singles possessing an advanced degree, DC is easily the most educated city out of the three.  Nearly 50% of single women have their masters! (Take THAT 20th century!) So what do these smarty-pants do with their shiny degrees? Well, 13% of women are still in the process of getting them (students) while 14% of men use their education to become management consultants

online dating threatens monogamy?

The Best New Years Resolution

January 12, 2013/in Date Stats /by CMB

By now, most people in the dating world have already seen or heard about the recent Atlantic article about how online dating is purportedly threatening monogamy as we know it. In the chaotic aftermath of that article, many people likely received frantic calls from their parents, pleading with them to close all their online dating accounts and to “stop trivializing romance!”
Fortunately for the monogamists and worried parents of the world, a rebuttal article surfaced on The Atlantic the next day, claiming that, statistically, there is little evidence to support such dire claims. But what the evidence did suggest is that online dating may actually lead to more marriages by helping people find more strongly compatible partners.
We at Coffee Meets Bagel wanted to jump into this debate, so last week we pushed out a survey asking our lovely bagels what they thought about online dating and whether it was affecting their ability to seek and sustain good relationships. We published a sneak peak of our results on Thursday, and we can confidently say that, at least among the Coffee Meets Bagel population, online dating has not diminished the majority of users’ desire or ability to find serious relationships.
Commitment is safe!
In fact, 65 percent of Coffee Meets Bagel users said they are primarily looking for a relationship. And online dating doesn’t seem to be hurting anyone’s prospects of finding that sort of relationship. When asked if online dating makes them want more casual dates and fewer serious relationships, 60 percent of men and 50 percent of women said that it has no impact either way, and interestingly, 14 percent of men and 40 percent of women said online dating has the opposite effect – it causes them to want more serious, monogamous relationships! This flies in the face of the original Slater article, which suggested that online daters would be paralyzed by the breadth of alternative matches and thus never be willing to fully commit to the match they found.
Online dating may actually help with commitment.
One interesting finding from our survey is that, of the people who believed that online dating made them actually want to more strongly seek committed relationships, most believed that as they met more and more people from online dating sites, they increasingly realized just how hard it can be to find the right match. Rather than give up on finding a match, our bagels seem to emerge from online dating more resolute than ever to find their special someone. Maybe that’s the best New Years resolution of all.

Top 10 Fashion Brands Among Singles

Top 10 Fashion Brands Among Singles & "Hot Singles"

December 11, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

It’s the holiday season, and you know what that means! Holiday shopping time!
Still don’t know what to get your single friends for the holidays?
A new social online dating company Coffee Meets Bagel analyzed 300,000+ of their match data & user profiles (facebook LIKES) to discern what fashion brands are singles’ favorites, and more interestingly, what fashion brands are favored among “hot” singles.
Among single women, J. Crew topped the fav fashion brand, while Banana Republic was top of the list among single men.

And the hottest brands among the “hottest singles”? For women, Urban Outfitters fans were 29% more likely to be LIKED by her matches than the average woman. Among men, Bonobos fans were 34% more likely to be LIKED by his matches than the average man! (I knew there was a good reason why I couldn’t resist going into Urban Outfitters whenever I passed their store window!)

Another interesting factoid: Can you guess what’s the only women’s brand that made the top 10 favorite fashion brands list among single men? Yup, you got it – Victoria’s Secretranked #8 among single men’s favorite fashion brands list!

So what are you waiting for? Try giving this snazzy blue-bloods straight pants from Bonobos or the beautiful cape coral rhinestone cuff earring from Urban Outfitters for your single friends this holiday season. It might just transform their love life for 2013.

Check out the infographic below for all the details!

Dating Statistics: 5 Ways Your City is Affecting Your Single Life

November 3, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

The single life can be hard sometimes — believe me, we know! There are so many things to consider: attraction, intelligence, compatibility, and even that simple spark. As if that doesn’t make it difficult enough, it turns out your geographical location matters too. Sounds crazy, no?

When it comes to finding a date in a big city, is it possible that you’re going against the odds? When it comes to choosing a city to find your match, is there such thing as the “right” city for you? According to the profiles of Coffee Meets Bagel members, the answer to both of those questions is yes.

As you can see, Boston seems like a safe bet overall— they have a good balance between both genders, the most educated picks available, and a good amount of diversity in religion. However, it’s definitely important to note Boston’s lack of ethnic diversity and the fact that NYC and SF offer a multitude of things to do for singles!!

Hope this helped— looks like none of them are 100% ideal, but hey, no city is perfect right?

September 16, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

Drumroll…Dating X-File #1 results are in! 557 of you took the survey and the results are pleasantly surprising – some more than others.

Here are a few key highlights (N=557):

  • Chivalry is still alive! 66% of CMB gents believe that girls should never pay on their first date. Wow! Call us conservative but we think it’s…well, just simply nice. Your moms have definitely taught you well. (And how perfect because 65% of CMB ladies said that they would offer to pay half of the bill but secretly hope their Bagels will pay the full bill)
  • 45% of gents & 56% of ladies on CMB are looking for a relationship
  • Most of CMB members are open to spontaneous meet ups. Spunky!
  • 1 out of 5 ladies would never initiate the first text! And close to 1 out of 3 ladies said they would never follow up with their Bagels first after a date, even if the date was good. Sorry gents – this means more work for you. Ladies – only the courageous shall conquer the most treasured! Maybe we should step it up a bit. It’s okay to initiate first—it’s just a text!!

Happy reading!

UMich tops The Most Attractive Alums List on Coffee Meets Bagel! (AND are apparently the pickiest too)

August 29, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

Statistics behind love is back! This time our Chief Data Scientist sifted through over 68,000 matches we made so far to answer the question: Does school matter when it comes to dating?
YES! After analyzing the LIKE or PASS choices of members from the 10 most represented schools on Coffee Meets Bagel, we realized the answer is Yes. A lot, actually, especially for University of Michigan & Stanford kids. They were 17% and 13% more likely to LIKE Bagels from their Alma Mater vs. non-Alma Mater Bagels. Ironically, they also turn out to be two of the most popular schools, being LIKED by others 42% & 41% of the time! I guess some things never change: Popular kids still prefer to hang out within their own groups!
Some other random details we found:

  • Male & Female? Preference towards their Alma Mater was consistently displayed by both male and female.
  • School with most popular Gents:  Yale gents who were LIKED 39%
  • School with most popular Ladies:  Univ. of Michigan followed by Stanford ladies. They were both LIKED close to 50% of the time!
