The Biological Reasons Why She Or He Is Not That Into You

June 19, 2014/in Date Stats /by Guest Blogger
The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Everett Wetchler

Ladies firstIt’s a nice thought. “Love is blind.” “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” “Cocoa Puffs are part of a balanced breakfast.” Alright, only General Mills and I say the last one, but “age is just a number” is one of those mantras that may not be as true as we’d like it to be. Or is it?
At Coffee Meets Bagel, we get to test a lot of theories about human relationships, using our superpowers of data, statistics, and nosiness. Today let’s look at age in heterosexual relationships. There are many urban myths in this department — that women like older men,  that men like younger women (and avoid women over 30), etc. We’ll look at these as we analyze how often users of various ages “Like” each other on the site.

And, as expected, they’re more complex.
How to read this chart (nerds, skip this): Green blocks are where women really like men. For example, 22 year old women really like 23-24 year old guys. Red blocks are the opposite — for example, 33 year old women really don’t like 27 year old men. Yellow is average. The white area is where we don’t have enough data to say anything confidently. The bar on the right helps you translate colors to real percentages, if you’re curious.
dating stats

There are a few trends to note here.
At first glance, it seems that women mostly like men who are a little bit older. This comes as a shock… to nobody.
The line of red blocks along the bottom shows that women lose their taste for men quickly when they’re even a little younger.
What is surprising, though, is that women seem pretty happy with men the same age. Follow that dotted line — it’s mostly pleasantly green blocks. Averaging across users, let’s graph women’s tastes based on the difference from his age to hers.
Screen Shot 2014-04-07 at 7.07.44 PM
Women’s first choice, in fact, is men about the same age. Being younger costs them dearly, but being more than a little older costs them too. The myth of women being drawn to significantly older men (“Silver Foxes”) is just not supported. Hugh Hefner’s harem aside, it seems most women are not looking for the oldest, richest guy around. *Polite clap*
One more question — do women get less choosy as they get older? Let’s break up that last graph by women under and over 30:
Screen Shot 2014-04-08 at 5.33.14 PM
Older women universally “Like” men more often, of all ages, so yes it appears they get (marginally) less choosy. Especially when considering more-than-slightly-older men.
In brief: women aren’t actually seeking older men, but they are more tolerant of them. To a point. Silver foxes, besides George Clooney and the Dos Equis guy, are still more wrinkly than sexy.

On to the gentlemen

Buckle up boys, it’s going to be an uncomfortable ride.
Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 10.11.53 PM.png
First, look how smooth this pattern is. The women at least required some thought to understand, but men’s tastes are about as complicated as a four-piece jigsaw puzzle.
Men of all ages will resoundingly pass over a younger woman for an even-younger one (the blocks get perpetually greener going down, as women get younger). You might expect that there would be at least SOME point where a woman being younger stops being better, that men would find such youthfulness immature or short on life experience, but that doesn’t happen.
Just to highlight how impressive this is — here is the same graph, with a line drawn in the bottom-right for the (admittedly unscientific) half your age plus 7 rule of socially acceptable dating. I relaxed the sample size threshold a bit (so there are more blocks filled in, but you can see it gets noisier) to clearly show what “over the line” behavior looks like.
Screen Shot 2014-04-07 at 2.13.01 AM.png
Not only are men OK with women below the half-age-plus-7 line, but those ladies are their FAVORITES. Different cultures have different views on age disparity, but it appears that the male appetite for younger women knows no bounds.

On that note, let’s recap. Women care about a man’s age *relative* to her own, while men care substantially more about a woman’s *absolute* age. The graph below drives the point home.
Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 11.12.34 AM
Other things equal, a man being older doesn’t help him a lot. But for women, the message is clear: younger = better liked. It may not be convenient, but there you have it.
For women, it’s also interesting to note that there is nothing special about the age of 30. The downward slope is pretty consistent from ages 22-35, with every year mattering about the same as the next. So relax about hitting the big three-oh. That one really IS just a number.

In search of a cause

This is where data analysis becomes more art than science. Yes, men tend to prefer younger women, that’s pretty conclusively supported. And yes, the All Men Are Scoundrels theory is one (cheap) explanation that fits. With a little outside research, however, we could tell another story.
Let’s back up. Why do we date? Lots of reasons — for fun, for sex, for companionship, or to start a family. And according to this data, men (not women) choose their dates to optimize for starting a family. Subconsciously at least.
I’ll back that up in one word: fertility. Well, two words: historical fertility. There’s a great wikipedia page on Age and Female Fertility, but the upshot is summarized in one sentence: “A woman’s fertility peaks in her early and mid-20s, after which it starts to decline, with this decline being accelerated after age 35.” As you can see in the graph above, the gap between how often men and women are liked is greatest at 22, and gradually declines, eventually vanishing around 35. Whether you buy the causality is up to you, but the biological correlation is undeniable.
Granted, with modern medicine women have a high chance of conceiving well into their 40’s, but for 99.99% of human evolution, this was not true, and men’s tastes are likely not up to date. It’s a pretty safe bet that, in most situations, men aren’t thinking about conceiving a baby when they ask a woman out, but their preferences certainly correlate with that motive.
Shouldn’t women care about fertile men, too? Male fertility is a significant issue, with the onset sooner than you might think. A man’s virility peaks around age 22, declining over time, and as he enters his 40s, it can take many more months to conceive a child with his partner. Yet women’s tastes resoundingly don’t vote for the fastest swimmers. They vote for men who are about the same age, regardless of what age that is. Perhaps they are optimizing for long term companionship, or parental investment, and indeed their preferences align extremely well with what actually happens in marriages.

Beyond the obvious

The takeaway here is not that a woman’s desirability is purely a function of her uterus. Everyone, men and women of all ages, are liked at minimum about 20% of the time. Being a woman with a high historical fertility helps her chances, but it’s still a minority factor. Let’s take that graph of how women are liked by age, and color some things in:
Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 11.59.49 AM
We can’t just compare the raw size of these regions without committing crimes against statistics, but the overall point is still legitimate: most of why people are liked, male or female, has nothing to do with their reproductive ability. For any age, even 22 year old women, more than half of their appeal is not fertility-motivated.

One bonus of being an older woman is that while you get fewer likes on average than your younger counterparts, those likes are much more attributable to something specific to you. Here’s a couple of pie charts showing the tradeoff:

The dating game undoubtedly changes with age. But depending on what you’re looking for, it may only get sweeter.

Are nerds really the new cool?

Attention all nerds: Are nerds really the new cool when it comes to dating? Here is what we found.

April 4, 2014/in Date Stats /by CMB

Hi Bagels,

Ever since moving to SF, I hear this phrase a lot – “Nerds are the new cool”. Thanks to the newly minted young gazillionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Larry & Sergey, the term “nerd” really has taken on a whole new meaning. And yes, many of my girlfriends go on and on about how they find guys with thick glasses and messy hair so cute & adorable.

But is it true? I mean, sure there’s a certain appeal to the super stars like Mark but does the allure of Nerdom descend down to the rest of us common folk?

Are nerds really the new cool?

Thanks to the diversified professions represented among Coffee Meets Bagel members and our team of brilliant staticians we decided to take a crack at finding this out.  Welcome to Dating Myth #2: Are nerds really the new cool? (Dating myth #1 as you know was: Do Jewish Men Really Have A Thing for Asian Women?)

As usual, a quick refresher on how CMB works:  Every day at noon, CMB introduces members to one single (AKA a “Bagel”), whom they must LIKE or PASS within 24 hours. These Bagels are friends of friends who also meet the member’s basic match criteria – gender, age, race, religion – along with some other personal data like their job, interests, personality etc. A mutual LIKE leads to a direct connection via a private phone line and the rest is up to them.
Definition of Nerd
We took a very narrow, job-based definition of the term and so, for the purposes of this analysis: nerd = engineers & scientists (I clearly am not a nerd). We then compared how much the engineers & scientists are liked by their Bagels vs. 17 other jobs most represented on Coffee Meets Bagel.
Unfortunately, we currently don’t have enough LGBT members to compile an accurate analysis so, rather than present incomplete data we’ve once again limited this study to straight men & women. I apologize ahead of time to our LGBT members. Help us get more LGBT members by inviting your friends!
Moving on, here is what we found for both straight men & women.

Despite the alleged coolness of the 21st Century Nerd, it doesn’t look like they can compete with the old school trifecta of doctor, banker, and lawyer, which swept the top 3 in terms of most attractive jobs among Coffee Meets Bagel men (I guess we ladies are more traditional than we think!). Both scientists and engineers scored below average.
Did female nerds fare better? Not really, according to the chart below. Surprisingly, the top 3 jobs men found most attractive in women were startup (as defined as founders, entrepreneurs, business owners etc.), fashion, and consulting (I’m a startup girl but I swear I am not making this up!)

As a side note, I noticed that the one common factor among the top 3 most attractive jobs in men – doctors, bankers, and lawyers – is that they all bring in a lot of $$ vs. the top 3 most attractive jobs among women – startup, fashion, consultant – don’t (generally speaking).

I went ahead and researched the median salary of each occupation with the help of glassdoor.com and ranked each of the occupations in terms of attractiveness (% LIKED) & their median salary.

Then I mapped this out on a graph.

Check out the correlation between the median salary of each job & the % that these men were LIKED. What’s more amazing: the 3 exceptions to the rule.

Really??! The only 3 jobs that ranked higher than avg. in terms of median salary but scored below avg. in % LIKED were HR, Engineer, Scientist. Yes, the nerds…and HR (sorry guys). Is this sheer coincidence or what?
Here is what the same info looked like for the ladies.  As you can see, there’s a slight correlation but it’s much more diversified.

It’s always amazing to me to see the stereotypes you hear about gender roles and expectations in society come alive in the numbers.

Conclusion
Based on our career-centric definition it looks like nerds are still, well, nerds. Doctors, lawyers and bankers rule the day and traditional gender roles and expectations still persist, in the dating world at least.
I am guessing that when my girlfriends say they find nerdy guys cute & adorable, they were probably thinking of nerds like Matt Farrell in Die Hard or maybe Alexis Ohanian of Reddit. They still want to date a doctor, they just want him to wear nerdy glasses. Sorry Poindexters and Poindextras, it looks like you lose this round.

nerds really the new cool
Progress? Hey, it’s a start.

Dating myth #2: Are nerds really the new cool?

Final verdict: False. Quite the opposite actually.

Degrees and Dating

Here’s How Your MBA Is Affecting Your Love Life

January 11, 2014/in Date Stats /by CMB

Here at CMB, we know that our users are intelligent — you’re smart enough to have chosen us after all! Joking aside, what you may not know is that we are indeed, statistically, a favorite among highly educated professionals. Believe it or not, over 35% of our member base has a master’s degree or higher. Compare that to the national average of people with master’s degrees or higher at 12%, you guys are a bunch of smarty pants!

Naturally, we were curious to see if having a graduate degree, or other further degree, has any correlation to a member’s attractiveness and preferences. We looked at over 20 million matches and here’s what we found. Let’s start with the dudes.

Men & Their MBAs

MA Dating

Well check you guys out! Not only are you the second most liked degree, but you’re also pretty dang picky when it comes to who you LIKE on CMB! Don’t feel too bad about coming in second to the doctor bagels — they did go to school for like, 5 more years than you did. What’s weird though is that you guys surpass everyone else while you’ve spent the least amount of time in school post-undergrad. My theory is that I bet most of you have to wear suits to work and no man looks bad in a good suit. Extra points if you wear bow ties.

Women & Their MBAs

MA Dating

As always, men and women are as different as Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, and our study proves no exception. Almost opposite to what women prefer, men aren’t particularly hot for women with MBAs (or for women holding any other professional or other higher degrees)! Ladies with only their bachelor’s degree seem to catch their eye most often. Essentially, all of those extra years of school you endured were totally useless as far as your dating life is concerned (which is totally why you went back to school, isn’t it? wink wink). The good news is, we don’t think this is a sign that men don’t find high achieving women attractive — after all, female MDs were the second most liked. My hypothesis? Maybe the issue here is more related to age. Naturally, a woman with a PhD would be significantly older than a recent undergrad graduate, and you know how those men love those younger women — I’m totally rolling my eyes right now.

What’s interesting is that women holding only undergrad degrees were also the pickiest, followed again by MDs. I guess popular groups just have a sixth sense about these things and know they can be picky.

What’s Trending In The Profiles Of Bagels With MBAs?

Realizing that the type of degree someone holds has a clear impact on their attractiveness, I was curious if there is a distinctive way people with different degrees present themselves on their profiles. Are there words or phrases that are commonly used amongst bagels with their MBA?
We loved how OkCupid conducted a similar study (but with race), so we emulated their methodology in this study. We looked at all of our users who have a MBA’s profiles and isolated words and phrases in their profiles that were used most frequently. The results? Check out the chart below.
Terrell W. Orr
FYI – For those of you who are not familiar with Coffee Meets Bagel, here’s an example of what a member’s profile looks like on Coffee Meets Bagel (this is mine). The words used in the last three sections of the profile are what we used for this study.
MBA Dating

Oh how you business people can be so predictable: “corporate,” “start-ups,” “economist,” “counting,” “finance,” you’re obsessed with your jobs! However, it looks like MBAs also love to travel, and they have great taste in wine (in my opinion). If you’re searching for a fellow hottie with an MBA, you might want to check out your local bocce ball and squash courts; apparently businessmen and women enjoy really obscure lawn games.

We can’t be totally sure what’s going on here, but it sure is interesting. Overall, it looks like men are into women with less smarts than them (frowny face), and women lust after doctors and businessmen. What do you think?

Dating Myth #3: Does Your Alma Mater Really Matter?

September 20, 2013/in Date Stats /by CMB

Do you remember the letter that Susan Patton wrote to the editor of The Daily Princetonian called “Advice for the young women of Princeton: the daughters I never had”? (If you haven’t, read it now! It’s not to be missed).

Her advice to the Princeton freshmen ladies was to find a husband while they are at school because they “will never again be surrounded by this concentration of men who are worthy of [them]”.
She argues that while men are forgiving about “a woman’s lack of erudition, if she is exceptionally pretty, smart women can’t (shouldn’t) marry men who aren’t at least their intellectual equal.”
It’s now September and that means back-to-school season – which got me thinking – as infuriating as it is, is Susan’s argument true?  Are women better off trying to find their partners while they are still at school? And, more specifically, does your Alma Mater really matter when it comes to dating? Welcome to Dating Myth #3.
Top 50 most represented schools on Coffee Meets Bagel
In order to answer this question, we first took a look at the top 50 most heavily represented schools on Coffee Meets Bagel, and ranked each one based on their “popularity” as defined by % of times each alum was LIKED by their Bagels.
We then narrowed it down further to the 10 most sought after schools among men & women on Coffee Meets Bagel – look who came out on top.
Ironically, women seem to prefer gentlemen from Princeton the most–is this some freaky coincidence or is there really just something special about Princeton men?  Regardless, based on the data, all you Princeton guys out there should probably keep your student IDs handy when you’re going on dates. Couldn’t hurt.

School’s popularity and its academic ranking

Is it a pure coincidence that most of these top 10 schools are universities with the strongest academic programs in the nation? Generally, in my experience as a statistician, the word “coincidence” is simply shorthand for “missing correlative data”.  So, using Forbes’ Academic Ranking, I decided to actually map out the relationship between a school’s popularity & its academic rigor, for both men & women.
And voila, the results were quite revealing.
Here is what the graph looks like for men:

And here is how it looks like for women:

I think these two graphs say it all – yes, gentlemen – your alma matter does matter to the ladies. Generally speaking, the better your school, the better your chance of getting dates. See, women value intelligence and they use your alma mater as an indicator of how smart you are.  We’re tricky like that.

(Side Comment: I used absolute Forbes ranking to create this map and note the concentration of dots in the upper half of the quadrant – Most Academic  – ain’t we fancy!)

Wait, does this mean that Susan Patton was right? Does this mean I need to go back to school and get my MRS degree to find a good husband?
Definitely not, if you ask me. Yes, intelligence matters but that’s such a small piece of the entire equation. To me dating is about finding somebody we’re truly compatible with, somebody who “gets us”, challenges us, surprises us. That means knowing who we are and what we want. I don’t know about the rest of you but back in college I barely knew what classes I wanted to take the next semester, much less who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
So yes, I’m sure Princeton is a great place to find a date but I’m also pretty sure that Susan Patton never heard of Coffee Meets Bagel.
See you out there.
Dating Myth #3: Does your alma mater matter when it comes to dating?
Answer: Yes and No. It matters to women but not so much to men.
