New York: Coffee Meets Charity #1!

August 21, 2012/in CMB Says, Uncategorized /by CMB

In the early morning of Sunday, August 19th, when the rest of the city was still quiet asleep, 7 generous CMB gents & 4 kind CMB ladies set off to Harlem for New York’s first Coffee Meets Charity event. Their mission?  Help New York City cut energy usage and lower greenhouse emissions by painting a reflective surface to a building roof.
Hours of arduous labor was quickly rewarded with fun conversations, lots of laughs, and a great sense of satisfaction (and for some, also a rekindled sense of responsibility). After a delicious lunch provided by NYC Cool Roofs, the good-hearted CMBers parted their ways, promising to connect again before the end of the month at CMB’s Summer Rooftop Party.
Thanks everyone for making this such an amazing event!

CMB TIPS: Profiles and Photos

August 17, 2012/in Tips on CMB /by CMB

Did you get PASSED again? Of course your Match would apologetically state the pseudo-compassionate line: “It’s Not You, It’s Me.”  But, maybe it IS you.  The CMB Tips series offer priceless advice from the pros on how to turn that PASS into a LIKE and that LIKE into a “HEY NICE TO MEET YOU IN PERSON, YOU TURNED OUT JUST AS I IMAGINED.”
Did you know that having a more descriptive profile with the right pictures can increase your LIKE rate by 30%?  So spend that extra minute on your profile to let your true colors show and excavate your Facebook photos for at least three pictures of you where you aren’t rapidly shaking your head side to side, yelling at your friend not to take the picture – those tend to turn out blurry.

Dating Statistics: You may not be an Olympian but playing sports can still make you more desirable!

August 7, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

How athletic are singles in NYC & Boston area? What is the most popular sports among them? Lastly, which sports make you the most desirable?

The London Olympics 2012 is coming to an end soon but to continue the fun, Coffee Meets Bagel analyzed 68,000+ matches to uncover the relationship between love & sports.

1. How athletic are singles in the NYC & Boston?

  • About a third of the singles, both men and women, mentioned at least one sport on their profiles.
  • Singles’ athletic level was similar across all age groups.
  • Contrary to the “nerd” stereotype, more educated members seemed more athletic.
  • Catholic/Christians were the most interested in sports, while Muslims were the least.

2. What is the most popular sports?

  • Men and women mentioned the same sports 70% of the time.
  • But! The top 10 rankings were totally different. The top three sports for women were running, yoga, and hiking while guys mentioned running, tennis, and basketball.

3. Which sport makes you the most desirable???

  • So, which sports should you play to get more dates? If you are a woman, golf makes you 41% more desirable by men vs. those who don’t play, followed by skiing (16% more) and working out (14% more). Male football players (or football fans) are 38% more likely to get LIKED than men who are not, followed by cyclist (22% more) and basketball players (19% more).

Happy Olympics everyone!
*Special thanks to our members John & Krizia for the awesome findings

New York: Pink Party

July 18, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC, Uncategorized /by CMB

Pranna’s romantically lit Cellar Bar was filled with more Bagels than a New York City deli.  We were elated by the turn out and the positive feedback expressed by our members.

At CMB we believe it “only takes one.”  One Match, One Connection…and as we’ve witnessed yesterday: One Party.  Beautiful connections were made as our Bagels enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres, perfectly mixed drinks (by that dashing bartender with a striking resemblance to Ryan Reynolds) and mood setting beats by our very own DJ Dee Dre.

Want to re-live the night (or for our Boston members, see what’s in store)?  Listen to the official Pink Party Mixtape as you scroll through these pictures.  Make sure you visit our Facebook page to view all photos.

Permission for More…Why?

May 27, 2012/in Date Tips, Uncategorized /by CMB

In the past few weeks, you may have noticed that we’ve been asking for permission to access some of your FaceBook (FB) information. Specifically, your photos, your profile info, and your friends’ profile info.

Naturally, you maybe wondering “Why?” Some of you may even feel wary about these changes. We wanted to take the time to explain why.

Our primary goal here is to make your experience at Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB) as easy & seamless as possible. Every piece of information we collect will ONLY be used to achieve this.

For example, having access to your photos will enable us to auto-populate your FB profile photos as CMB profile photos so you do not have to manually upload them. We can also auto-fill some information about your interests and likes on your CMB profile to save you time. Right now, many members do not have time to upload more than one photo or fill out their profile in detail. Unfortunately, “lack of Information” is the #1 reason for our Bagels being PASSed.

And your friends’ profile? This will enable us to make more friends of friends (of friends) introductions to you!

In the end, ONLY YOU will be the ultimate decider of what of your FB information you will share on CMB. If you do not want any of your FB profile photos as CMB photos, you can choose to delete them and manually upload your own photos. We just want to be able to offer you the option, to make things easy for you.

Let us know if you have any questions.

CMB 3 Months Reflection from the Founders

May 20, 2012/in CMB Says, Uncategorized /by CMB

It’s been 3 months since our private launch on Valentine’s Day. It’s been an amazing roller coaster ride ever since. Believe it or not, we’ve made well over 30,000 daily introductions. A LOT of them have turned into SMS connections and in-person meetings, and several of them evolved into relationships—that we know of, but I’m sure there are more. We’ve had our fair share of breakdown moments and panic attacks along the way but these positive early stats and the exciting comments and feedback we hear from our members are what energize us and keep us going. (Note: This may be getting too personal but I lost 8 lbs over the past 3 months, probably due to stress. Can being an entrepreneur be a new form of diet?) I have to say, we’re extremely happy with the progress we have made and grateful for the support we have received so far. It’s only the beginning, but a great one.

We get asked very often where our idea comes from. Our idea was formed at the Art Institute of Chicago last July, when my co-founder/sister and I made a weekend trip to take a break from NYC. We had been looking into the online dating space for a while-both from personal and business perspective. Among many problems we saw in this space, we both wondered why there isn’t a product that people are excited about. For example, I look at fashion brands and see people get so excited about finding the perfect fitting jean from their favorite brand on sale and rave about it. Why can’t we create a brand like that in online dating? Then we thought about Gilt and other daily deal services—the combination of simplicity, curated selection and time component not only made the entire user experience better and less time-consuming but also made it so much more exciting. Bingo. Our mission was set—to provide the world’s most exciting, curated dating experience.

We’re still very far from making that happen. Our user experience needs a lot of improvement and testing, our features need to be expanded and our algorithm needs continuous refinement (BTW, we’re always eager to hear from ML algorithm experts!). But we feel very confident that we’re on the right path and we have what it takes to help our members find the one.

Finally, we have some great releases coming up—including the eagerly awaited mobile app that you have been dying to get. I’m testing it on my Android as we speak, and it’s very cool to see our own app logo on my phone and, well, even cooler to see that it works well. :)

In the next 3 months, we look forward to providing you with a better product. But we can’t do it alone! We ask for your feedback, and most importantly, support in sharing your enthusiasm with your friends and family. After all, more of your friends of friends means better introductions for you. Remember, sharing makes perfect.

Thanks for reading!
