Top 10 Fashion Brands Among Singles

Top 10 Fashion Brands Among Singles & "Hot Singles"

December 11, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

It’s the holiday season, and you know what that means! Holiday shopping time!
Still don’t know what to get your single friends for the holidays?
A new social online dating company Coffee Meets Bagel analyzed 300,000+ of their match data & user profiles (facebook LIKES) to discern what fashion brands are singles’ favorites, and more interestingly, what fashion brands are favored among “hot” singles.
Among single women, J. Crew topped the fav fashion brand, while Banana Republic was top of the list among single men.

And the hottest brands among the “hottest singles”? For women, Urban Outfitters fans were 29% more likely to be LIKED by her matches than the average woman. Among men, Bonobos fans were 34% more likely to be LIKED by his matches than the average man! (I knew there was a good reason why I couldn’t resist going into Urban Outfitters whenever I passed their store window!)

Another interesting factoid: Can you guess what’s the only women’s brand that made the top 10 favorite fashion brands list among single men? Yup, you got it – Victoria’s Secretranked #8 among single men’s favorite fashion brands list!

So what are you waiting for? Try giving this snazzy blue-bloods straight pants from Bonobos or the beautiful cape coral rhinestone cuff earring from Urban Outfitters for your single friends this holiday season. It might just transform their love life for 2013.

Check out the infographic below for all the details!

In Response to OK Gorgeous

December 7, 2012/in CMB Says, From the founders, Uncategorized /by CMB

Dawoon here, your CMB co-founder! Yesterday we got a tough but fair analysis of our site by OK Gorgeous writer Amy Copperman. Copperman used the site, assessed it, and concluded that Coffee Meets Bagel is not a ”vehicle for anything deeper than scoring more first dates.”

True, our daily matches do give you lots of chances for first dates — and don’t you need that first date to see if round two is worth a shot? The problem with 21st century dating is not that singles can’t score second dates and more – the real problem is there aren’t many opportunities to connect with new quality singles. Ironically, when we have many friends to hang out with and too many things to do, we have less time to make new connections.

Our members crave to meet new, interesting people, and we love helping them make that initial connection. A critical difference between CMB and other dating services is that there is no “browsing;” you simply get one person a day. Copperman explained how this can be disconcerting, but our philosophy is that the lack of browsing makes a person on CMB a lot more special because you’re not amongst one of the thousands of people being sorted through.

The piece also made a good point – is CMB a site that helps you in “finding the one” or just “finding the one you want to have coffee with.” To us, someone we want to have coffee with is a great start to finding the one — because relationships and chemistry is hard to predict, and you just never know.

There are a lot of dating sites out today, as Copperman noted. A common response I get when I tell people that I run an online dating company is “I don’t do online dating.” I always respond by asking, “Why not?” I think everyone who is single and looking to meet others should be doing so both online and offline; dating sites are just additional channels to meet who you are looking for. Many people are concerned with overwhelming profiles and meeting creeps online. I founded CMB so I could address both concerns – It’s easy and simple— 3 minutes a day to check in, done. And there’s no creepy factor because our matches are your friends of friends!

OK Gorgeous has always been one of my go-to sources for cheeky news – and we at CMB dug the feedback from a straight-talker like Copperman. A critical eye is what makes us keep striving to make our site better for our users. As always, feel free to share your thoughts, comments and suggestions with us at [email protected]!

A gal's experiment with online dating: Guys in NY vs. SF

December 5, 2012/in CMB Says, Date Stats, Uncategorized /by CMB

I guess you could say it was a hectic weekend— after all, I did get four different phone numbers from four different people in two very different cities.

The Experiment:

There are four single gals working at Coffee Meets Bagel and you know what that means -most of our noons are spent comparing our Bagels and 90% of our office conversation revolves around dating & guys. One of these many conversations was on online dating with guys in SF vs. NY, as some of us are native Californians and some relocated from NY. The heated debate about the quality of guys in the two cities led to an interesting experiment proposal: To sign up for an online dating site in both NY & SF with the same exact profile and compare the guys that approached us. (We selfishly didn’t want to “experiment” with our own members so signed up for another site which shall remain anonymous). Of course, I was picked as a guinea pig.

Results:

In just one weekend, I found a city’s dating scene is very much reflective of its culture.

Guys in NYC

Let’s start off with NYC. From the 12 messages that I received in just 2 days, I noticed a trend between them all. The basic theme was “What’s your number? Let me buy you a drink.” The messages were blunt and straight to the point; it was as if all these guys were pressed for time! They weren’t looking to make a small talk with me through online chat – they wanted to meet me and see for themselves what kind of person I am. Very reflective of the NYC culture: fast-paced, direct, and upfront.

Guys in SF

The dating scene in SF was a whole other ballgame. From the 16 messages I received, what I experienced was long chats on Saturday and Sunday nights about topics ranging from school to work to music. Whether or not they were doing this because they wanted to get to know me or they were just timid, I guess I’ll never know. What I do know is that these guys were definitely not the “let’s meet up now and figure out who we are later” type; these guys wanted to get to know me before they made their decision to ask me out. To me, this seemed much more familiar. As a Bay Area native, I’ve grown accustomed to a slower environment of dating and getting to know someone. Things are much more slow-paced and relaxed.

Simple comparison charts (caveat: highly subjective):

And the winning city is…!!

So what’s the verdict here? Surprisingly enough, I found myself preferring NYC’s style. I thought I would prefer the more relaxed appeal that SF had to offer, but there was something in the straightforward, “I-don’t-have-time-for-small-talk” attitude that I found so refreshing. My heart belongs to the Bay Area, but I have to admit: I much prefer the no-bullshit approach that NYC has to offer. SF guys! Can we be a little bit more blunt!

Statistics Behind Love (and Politics)

November 5, 2012/in Uncategorized /by CMB

Excited about Election Day 2012 tomorrow? Us too!

We couldn’t resist a little data analysis in light of the dramatic presidential race that’s been blowing up the media, and we found out some interesting facts about our members.

1. Are Coffee Meets Bagel members Republicans or Democrats?

A large percentage of our members chose to refrain from including their political stance on their profile. However, of those who did list their political stance we had 5.6 times more Democrats than Republicans members!

2. Who is more popular – Apolitical? Democrats? or Republicans?

At a first glance, there was no huge difference in popularity among the three groups:

  • Apolitical members were LIKED 29.1% of the time;
  • Republicans, 30.7%
  • Democrats, 28.8%

HOWEVER, when we looked at the gender breakdown between our main two demographics, Republicans and Democrats, it got interesting:

  • Male Republicans LIKED 29.2% of the time
  • Female Republicans, 32.1%
  • Male Democrats, 21.4%
  • Female Democrats, 34.8%

Apparently Male Democrats are out of favor.

Our members definitely have a type – is this a clue for the Election’s outcome tomorrow night? Regardless, Coffee Meets Bagel loves all our singles, and we want to encourage EVERYONE to vote tomorrow – because whoever you vote for, your vote matters!

Dating Statistics: 5 Ways Your City is Affecting Your Single Life

November 3, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

The single life can be hard sometimes — believe me, we know! There are so many things to consider: attraction, intelligence, compatibility, and even that simple spark. As if that doesn’t make it difficult enough, it turns out your geographical location matters too. Sounds crazy, no?

When it comes to finding a date in a big city, is it possible that you’re going against the odds? When it comes to choosing a city to find your match, is there such thing as the “right” city for you? According to the profiles of Coffee Meets Bagel members, the answer to both of those questions is yes.

As you can see, Boston seems like a safe bet overall— they have a good balance between both genders, the most educated picks available, and a good amount of diversity in religion. However, it’s definitely important to note Boston’s lack of ethnic diversity and the fact that NYC and SF offer a multitude of things to do for singles!!

Hope this helped— looks like none of them are 100% ideal, but hey, no city is perfect right?

Dating Statistics: Does your school matter when it comes to dating?

August 29, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

Statistics behind love is back! This time our Chief Data Scientist sifted through over 68,000 matches we made so far to answer the question: Does school matter when it comes to dating?

YES! After analyzing the LIKE or PASS choices of members from the 10 most represented schools on Coffee Meets Bagel, we realized the answer is Yes. A lot, actually, especially for University of Michigan & Stanford kids. They were 17% and 13% more likely to LIKE Bagels from their Alma Mater vs. non-Alma Mater Bagels. Ironically, they also turn out to be two of the most popular schools, being LIKED by others 42% & 41% of the time! I guess some things never change: Popular kids still prefer to hang out within their own groups!

Some other random details we found:

·Male & Female? Preference towards their Alma Mater was consistently displayed by both male and female.

·School with most popular Gents:  Yale gents who were LIKED 39%

·School with most popular Ladies:  Univ. of Michigan followed by Stanford ladies. They were both LIKED close to 50% of the time!

Dating Statistics: Attractiveness across the 5 boroughs of New York

August 26, 2012/in Date Stats /by CMB

We wanted to dedicate this week’s post to something very New York and thought it would be fun to compare some statistics across the 5 boroughs of New York (plus our friendly neighborhood, NJ). Specifically, how does our members’ popularity differ by neighborhood?
Here is what we’ve found (Unfortunately we did not have enough representation from the Bronx and Staten Island so those two were excluded).
Attractiveness score was the highest in Manhattan. This was not surprising, given that Manhattan make up the largest percentage of our member base, and as a Manhattaner myself, crossing the bridge to meet someone for a date is, of course, unthinkable(!). What’s more interesting to me was the attractiveness score within each of the boroughs.
Manhattan: Midtown/Upper Eastside turns out to be the attractive neighborhood within Manhattan. (too bad I live on the west side) Financial District + Harlem turned out the least popular, perhaps due to their remote(?) locations. A question for you: Does it matter where your date lives, as long as they reside within Manhattan? I guess another question is whether people make judgement on others based on their zipcode.

Queens: Sunnyside scored the most popular within Queens. The least popular was…Astoria.

Brooklyn: Fort Greene & Park Slope area scored the highest within Brooklyn. Parts of Williamsburg turned out to be the least popular.

Finally! New Jersey: Surprisingly despite the disadvantage in location, Fort Lee & Engelwood turned out to be quite popular… I hear that there is a large % of Koreans living in Fort Lee. :)

What might be an interesting next step would be to correlate this with other demographic data, such as income or education level by neighborhood to see if there are any relationships. But that’s all for now folks! We would love to hear your comments as always.
Have a great weekend.
