Set yourself up for success with a smile

December 1, 2022/in Blog, News, Stats /by Kaitlyn Crow

First impressions matter, and it turns out that your smile plays a pretty major role: When surveyed, 84% of daters in Hong Kong said a nice smile is more attractive than a six-pack!

So, we teamed up with dental company Zenyum to help you unlock two of the best assets in dating: A confident smile and a helping hand from CMB Premium.

Unlock CMB Premium and your best smile with Zenyum

Check out how our exclusive offers with Zenyum can get you free access to CMB Premium.

Take a 3-minute assessment

Get one free month of Premium when you take a picture of your teeth and let a Zenyum professional examine your smile through a free assessment.

The Science to Setting Your Preferences & Liking Bagels

June 28, 2019/in Blog, CMB 101 /by Guest Blogger

A note from Steve Pollock, Chief Product Officer at Coffee Meets Bagel

I’ve had success meeting a long-term partner on a dating app. And while my last relationship didn’t work out because, well, life happens – it was an incredibly fulfilling relationship. And another bright side: My experience with dating apps led me to meet Arum and Dawoon Kang, co-founders of Coffee Meets Bagel.

I’m Steve, the chief product officer at CMB. Like you, I’m actively dating and using apps, but now I have an inside view. My goal is to make you successful – and help you achieve your relationship goals.

I’ve interviewed lots of online daters, and work closely with our product development and data science team. The data science is the part that’s responsible for matching you with compatible “bagels” on the app. Naturally, I’ve seen many of our success stories, face-to-face and in the data – I’ve been studying relationship dynamics for a long time.

I truly believe that, with the right know-how, and yes, real effort, you can find a meaningful relationship on CMB. Here’s how to make Coffee Meets Bagel work for you.

Setting Your Preferences

First, you’ll need to refine your profile with frame-worthy pics and details (Don’t worry, we’ll give you plenty of tips on this in the coming days.) Then, it’s time to set your Preferences and check out your bagels. But before you start, let’s talk about just how powerful those Preferences can be.

Preferences vs. Dealbreakers

When I first started using dating apps, I thought that getting ultra-specific about what kind of people I wanted to see was a no-brainer. That way, I’d get only quality matches, right? But as it turns out, being too specific about your Preferences may actually lower the quality of the bagels you receive. That’s all due to our algorithm!

How Does the CMB Algorithm Work?

Our algorithm categorizes your set Preferences as “must-haves” in Suggested. Later, the algorithm will use additional info, such as your interests, social circles, education levels, and more, to make educated choices about your best bagels.

But because it considers those Preferences as dealbreakers, this means our algorithm won’t suggest anyone who is even slightly outside of those guidelines. For example, if there’s someone attractive nearby who shares your interests, but they’re just one year older than the age limit you set, our algorithm can’t consider them as a potential match.

In short: too many specific criteria → smaller pool of bagels for the algorithm to work with → less quality matches.

So while you definitely shouldn’t lower your standards or compromise your values when it comes to finding a partner, make sure they’re an absolute must for you – not just a “nice to have.”

Getting Those Bagels

The hard work’s done! Now, it’s just time to sit back and like or pass on my bagels…right? Not so fast. While you can start matching right away, there’s actually a science to browsing bagels.

Focus on the Matches Who Matter

If you’re used to swipe-based dating apps, it may be tempting to “like” any and every one just to see if they like you back. But at Coffee Meets Bagel, we use a “slow dating” approach by sending only your best bagels once per day.

This approach means you’ll be meeting daters looking for a serious relationship (just like you!). So be thoughtful. Take your time looking at each profile and only tap “💜” if a bagel has you feeling some kind of way.

And if the connection just isn’t there? Don’t feel bad about passing — it’s much better than matching and then ghosting.

Give “Maybe Bagels” a Chance

When I observe them liking or passing on bagels, I’m often surprised to find they have the total opposite issue of the one above; they pass on everyone.

While it’s great to know exactly what you’re looking for, I recommend giving “maybe bagels” a shot. As you know from building your own profile, it’s hard to self-promote!  The bagel’s profile may not tell their story well.

Could be interested in a bagel, but not 100% sure? Like them. Hey, they look cute in their first photo…but not feeling the second? Like them. See where it takes you – it could take you on a really memorable date! Tapping “like” doesn’t mean you’re in love.

And chatting with someone doesn’t mean you’re obligated to meet IRL. Not every match you chat with will turn into a date, and that’s OK. Liking a bagel just means you’re interested enough to give them a chance!

How Premium Can Help

Lastly, I want to put in a good word for our CMB Premium package. OK, so I know it may look a little…self-serving. I get it. But since I get a glimpse into the backend data, I can genuinely say that Premium really is the fastest way to get more quality connections. In fact, on average, Premium subscribers connect up to 2x as often as non-subscribers.

Here’s what CMB Premium includes:

💜 See all your likes: Why wait? Unblur all your likes and match instantly.

💜 8 Discover Likes a month: Send likes to people who catch your eye in Discover.

💜 Unlimited Skip the Line: Send flowers to popular people to stand out and be shown first.

💜 3 Boosts a month: Get up to 5x the views, plus likes that get shown sooner!

💜 And more, like access to Read Receipts, Activity Reports, Skip the Line, and Rewinds.

The Next Steps

✔️  Double check that your set Preferences are deal-breakers for you. To edit your Preferences, tap your “profile” icon. On iOS, tap on “Profile Preferences.” On Android, tap on the pencil icon in the bottom right corner. Navigate to the Preferences tab to select them.

✔️  Ready to try out a subscription? Head to the Bean Shop to see our latest subscription offerings and tap “Subscribe.”

You’re all set! Whether you try our Premium or just stick to your new liking routine, I hope you feel empowered to make your best connections on CMB.

Cuffing Season: A Survey on Romance, Seasonal Dates, and Body Warmth

October 29, 2018/in Date Stats /by Paige Butterfield

When the cooler months start tiptoeing in, when Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is played on the radio just
a little bit less, a lesser-known phenomenon begins to spread.

For some, it starts with an innate longing to steal someone else’s sweater that smells like Abercrombie cologne. For others, it’s a desperate desire to tell Grandma between “Pass the turkey,” and “Mashed potatoes, please,” that, “I AM DATING SOMEONE!”

In fact, there’s a name for the idea that singles tend to couple up in the colder months – Cuffing Season.

And with Cuffing Season upon us, Coffee Meets Bagel surveyed 2,026 of our members to find out more about how singles feel about the phenomenon. Peek at our infographic for the juicy details.

CuffingSeason

The lesson from our Cuffing Season data? Having a partner has a lot of perks during the colder months: romance, seasonal dates, holiday plus-one’s, and, most important to those surveyed…warmth.

While we love the idea of warming up with a plus-one, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We advocate looking for a partner when you feel ready, not because you feel pressured by friends, family, or the changing seasons. (Unless the season and your readiness coincide – then, cuff away!)
Until then, we suggest a good sweater.

Hosts From MTV’s ‘Catfish’ Get Real About Dating, Relationships at CMB Experience

October 25, 2018/in CMB Experiences /by Paige Butterfield

We can’t stop talking about our October 11th event, when special guests Nev Schulman and Laura Perlongo from MTV’s “Catfish” MC’d one of our CMB Experiences: The Gathering. As a refresher, The Gathering is a
series of intimate CMBxSofar concerts in NYC centered on meaningful dating and relationship stories.

The topic of the night?
Dating as self-discovery.

“It was all of our past relationships and what we’ve learned from them that allowed us to very quickly fall in love with each other,” Nev said at the event.
Between live music artists, Nev and Laura even made special appearances on our Instagram Story, where they answered dating-related questions from our fans. One Instagram fan asked how to stay positive after a relationship doesn’t work out.

“Even if this relationship didn’t work out, you learn something from it,” Nev said. “You know probably better now what you don’t want from your next relationship. You learn, and you grow.”

We were kind of obsessed with Nev and Laura’s insight into dating as self-discovery, so we followed up with the duo via email after the show to ask more.

After Hours Q + A

Q –
How have your relationships in general helped you grow as a person?
A –
Laura: Seeing yourself through other people’s eyes is always a good thing. I’ve seen different sides of myself shine in different relationships and identified which parts of myself serve me best.
Nev: Like a forest fire, when things burn down, as painful as it may be, it clears the way for new growth. Early relationships taught me the importance of honesty and fidelity. Later, relationships taught me about confidence and compatibility. Most recently, I’ve learned about patience and compromise.
Q –
(For Laura) What were some learnings from past relationships that led you to your relationship with Nev?

A –
Laura: If it’s not a good fit or timing is off, you can feel it in your core. Not to say it’s always perfect, but when you’re both ready for a real relationship, it’s very obvious. I learned that having similar goals and priorities (in my case adventure, family, and being open to change) are really important in choosing a life partner.
Q –
Dating can be hard. How can people stay positive and hopeful even when things don’t work out?

A –
Laura: Just remembering that there is no such thing as a failed experience. It’s an oxymoron. An experience you choose (i.e., to go on a date) is always worthwhile. No matter if it ends after one drink or turns into a long relationship, meeting people always teaches you something about yourself and/or helps someone else grow.
Nev: Don’t get discouraged. Knowledge of the person you DON’T want to be with is just as important as knowing the person you DO want to be with.
Q –
In the media, finding “the one” is generally depicted as the ultimate achievement. Any tips to help people filter out all that pressure throughout their dating journey?
A –
Laura: I think “the one” is simply time and place. When you find someone with the same commitment to love as you, you’ll know. Until then, don’t sweat it. Take it as an exciting time of exploration. In fact, once you DO find “the one” you might even miss all the random adventures you had when you were dating.

Nev: Every relationship has an expiration date. So, you should just be worried about finding the one you makes you happy NOW. Actual NOW happy. Not “future” happy.

Q –
“Cuffing season” is upon us. How do you think people can make sure they’re “cuffing” for the right reasons?
A–
Laura: Cuffing season is really about body heat and laziness. Make sure you have a warm coat. Very warm. And if you have a very warm coat and still want to see the person you’re dating, then you’re probably good.

About The Gathering and Coffee Meets Bagel Experiences
The Gathering is part of CMB Experiences – real-world events in real-world spaces, where people can unplug and practice being present. Together. We started Coffee Meets Bagel Experiences because we don’t think meaningful connections should be limited to the online world.
In fact, while the CMB journey starts out online, the most important connections are made face-to-face. Check out other exciting CMB Experiences we’ve put together, like the Run Date Festival and Camp Meets Bagel.

Run Date Festival 2018 – A CMB Experience

February 25, 2018/in CMB Experiences /by Audrie Thompson

On February 11th, 2018, Coffee Meets Bagel hosted Asia’s largest singles running event at Hong Kong Science Park in Hong Kong, with over 1,500+ participants! The 5km run involved a group warm up with ice breaker activities, two obstacle courses that could only be done in pairs, and some awesome date activities like latte making classes and dinner for two as rewards.
So you might be wondering…why did a dating app organize Run Date 2018? At Coffee Meets Bagel, we want to create authentic connections for this generation in all possible ways. We didn’t want to be limited by the online world. We thought hard: how can we bring more playfulness and fun to dating? What if we create in-person opportunities for people to have fun and make new connections – not in an awkward networking event kind of way – but through experiencing new things that you can actually enjoy.
This is why we decided to launch CMB Experiences – unique, real-world events and spaces where people can step offline and engage in a fun, novel, delightful experience together that inspires them to share and connect authentically with someone new! Run Date Festival in Hong Kong was the first CMB Experience of many to come. This coming May, we will host our second CMB Experience — Camp Meets Bagel, a summer sleep-away camp for grown ups that will take place in New York.
We hope that through these shared experiences we can create a sense of relatedness, camaraderie and belonging for everyone! We are excited to organize a series of CMB Experiences that will make great memories for you and your friends, foster great new friendships, and maybe spark some romance as well.

Video has Arrived!

November 7, 2017/in CMB Updates /by CMB

Please note: as of May 17, 2018, Community/Video will no longer appear in the app as we work on exciting changes to this section. Stay tuned for updates!

Lights … Camera … Bagels! Coffee Meets Bagel is excited to present our newest feature: Video! We created Video to help you connect more authentically with your Bagels.

We know you are focused on making genuine connections, but it’s hard to get a real sense of someone from a few pictures and a short bio. So we created a unique, question-of-the-day Video section to let you see your Bagels’ mannerisms, hear their voice, and get more insight about their personality — before you even meet!

So, how does it work?

At the top of the Video section, you will see Today’s Topic, which will be updated daily.

Scroll through the feed to see the Bagels who have answered Today’s Topic. Tap the video for sound. Click the Bagel’s thumbnail to view their full profile. See someone you like? Use the heart icon to Take their profile (the same way you would in Discover). Don’t see a heart icon? This means the Bagel is seeking a gender other than yours.

You can record your own video by tapping the camcorder icon next to Today’s Topic. Get your answer ready, make sure your face is in the screen, then press and hold the blue button at the bottom of the screen to record yourself.

Once you’re satisfied with your response, just tap “Post” and your video will upload to the feed.

Want to know something amazing we learned when testing Video?

37% of all videos posted were TAKEN, so posting videos really does increase your chances of being Liked and making more authentic connections. Don’t be shy, just be yourself!

Now go ahead and try out Video, check Today’s Topic, and let yourself be seen! *Upgrade to the latest version in your app store for access (version 4.0 on Android or 5.0 on iOS).
