The 12 Dates of Christmas: Twelve of the Best First Date Ideas for the Holiday Season

December 9, 2013/in Date Ideas /by Guest Blogger

Christmas season is coming and what better way to spend it then with your bagel?  Here are some of the best first date ideas (and second date!) for the holiday season.

1. Ice-skating

Ice-skating, best date ideas for christmas
Ice-skating under the Christmas stars is probably one of the most cliche, yet beautifully picturesque dates that you need to do. Spend the night holding hands and doing loops around the rink to “Jingle Bell Rock”.

2. Hot Chocolate & Christmas Movies

peppermint hot chocolate, christmas movies, best holiday date ideas
Snuggle up under the blankets with a mug of peppermint hot chocolate and tune in for a marathon of your favorite holiday movies.  We recommend classics like Elf, Gremlins, and Miracle on 34th Street.

3. See a Local Christmas Musical or Play

Christmas Musical, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Christmas date ideas
Get in the Christmas spirit and stop by your local theater or church to watch performances of classics like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or “The Christmas Carol”.

4.  Watch a Christmas Symphony or Ballet

Christmas Symphony, Hendel's Messiah, Christmas Music, Christmas Date Ideas
Experience the wondrous sights and sounds of Christmas by attending a performance of Handel’s Messiah or the Nutcracker Suite by your local symphony or ballet.

5. Go Thrift Shopping for Ugly Christmas Sweaters

For all the hipsters out there, what better way to spend time with your date then hunting for hidden treasures at the local thrift store?  Plus, you’ll have an easy outfit to wear to that ugly sweater party your friend’s throwing.

6.  Look at Neighborhood Christmas Lights

Hop in your car and spend the night driving around neighborhoods well-known for their extravagant holiday decorations.  Nothing beats good conversation and admiring the gorgeous Christmas lights.

7. Decorate a Gingerbread House

Come prepared with your favorite candies and show off your creative side through this edible, Christmas treat.  Buy a pre-made kit, or if the two of you are ambitious, you can build your own house from scratch.

8. Volunteer at a Toy Drive

Give back by volunteering at a local toy drive. This Christmas season give the greatest gift of joy and put a smile on a child’s face.

9. Go Tobogganing

Instead of building snowmen, making snow angels, and participating in typical snowball fights, try something a bit more adventurous! Get ready for a thrill when you take your date tobogganing down the snow-covered hills at the local park.

10. Harvest Your Own Christmas Tree

Embrace the outdoors and head out to a Christmas tree farm to choose and cut down your own tree. Check out this site for nearby farms in your state.

11. Go Window Shopping

Take a stroll downtown to admire the gorgeous decorations and window displays of your favorite shops and luxury brands.  Macy’s in particular is known for their festive decorations and giant Christmas trees.

12. Have a Christmas Food Party

What would Christmas be without all the festive food? Treat your date to a romantic dinner at one of the best restaurants in town or better yet, cook up a holiday-inspired feast in the comforts of your kitchen. Make sure to indulge in some prime rib, Christmas ham, and pecan pie.

Conquering Post-Christmas Withdrawal with 3 Great Date Ideas in SF

June 21, 2013/in SF /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Catherine Nguyen

Hey Bagels,
Happy June 25th! For some of you, today is any regular Tuesday, the notorious day-before-hump-day in the long work week. For others, it marks the halfway point in the year until Christmas Eve. While 6 months is a lot of time for the summer heat to get you down, and winter withdrawals to kick in, don’t fret! We got 3 great date ideas in SF for you to check out to celebrate a successful Christmas in the Summer, Aussie-style.
1. Summer Night Lights
Looking to take a romantic stroll down memory lane for overly-decorated homes with Christmas lights & Santa Clauses’? Look no further. Starting at dusk and going until 2 am, the San Francisco Bay Bridge will be lit with 25,000 white LED lights – a project called the Bay Lights. Catch the monumental light sculpture right before sunset with the app, Rise for accurate times on sunrise & sunset so you can get turned on by the Bay Lights when it turns on!

Got a knack (or a sweet tooth) for decorating gingerbread houses? Channel your inner chef with a romantic, 3-day class on Pastry Fundamentals at SF Cooking School! Learn the science behind pastry making with chocolate-glazed eclairs, fruit turnovers, & Devil’s Food cupcakes – YUM.  See what’s bakin’ on July 16-18 @ 6-10pm and reserve your spot now!

Remember when you were going to invite your Bagel over & cook a romantic dinner for her? Do you really know what you’re doing?
Take a cooking class instead & show off your culinary skills with dignity!

If you can’t wait that long, check out Sweetly Sentimental Treats at Black Jet Bakery in South Beach for immediate indulgence & a sweet deal! This bakery knows how to hit the spot, baking only single-serving goodies. With classic treats from organic, local ingredients, Black Jet makes only the best of the best.
Insider tip from our friends @ Sosh: check out the jam-filled turnovers (arguably better than Pop-Tarts) & Devil Dogs (definitely better than Hostess Cakes) pictured below:

Yeah, we weren’t kidding. Look how good these look.

3. In the Rink & On Wheels
Wish you could ice skate  your new beau & casually hold hands because you’re “falling”? Why waste time waiting around for the Union Square ice skating rink to return, when you can roller skate with your Bagel every Tuesday night @ Inner Mission’s FunkyTown. Entry is $10 plus a few extra bucks to cover skate rentals — but beer & margaritas are on the house! They also have rental options to go outdoors so you can soak up the summer sun with your Bagel on weekends!

If you’re looking for something on wheels but more scenic than indoor roller skating, try tandem biking around the SF Marina, Golden Gate Park, and across the Golden Gate Bridge with SF Bicycle Rentals, electric biking (for the lazy) with Plugz, and even renting your bike from SF locals via SpinLister, a bike rental marketplace for individuals & bike renting shops!

Holiday Season Dating Tip: Is It Time to Meet The Parents?

November 29, 2012/in Date Tips, For Her, For Him, Uncategorized /by CMB

It’s that harrowing time of year again –  family holidays are full speed ahead and that means you and that flame you’ve been blissfully running around the city arm and arm with, not a care in the world, suddenly have to decide – is it time to meet the parents?
This can be a terrifying notion for both guys and gals, because we all want to be liked by our beau’s family. Buy why is making a good impression on the fam so important in the 21st Century? It seems outdated to some, but meeting family is a big step in a pair’s relationship. If the people who raised your sweetheart from birth – who made them who they are today – have trouble interacting with you, then it may be a sign to reevaluate your relationship.
But hey! Don’t despair! Normally, all it takes is a little extra courtesy and self-awareness to make that trip home to meet his or her parents smooth sailing. And luckily, there’s plenty of easy-to-follow advice on how to make a great first impression.
BostInno’s great writer Lisa DeCanio advised last week in an article about first-time family meet n’ greets: ”Be yourself – but don’t be yourself. Don’t be a phony, but remember that this is much more important that hanging out with your buddies. First impressions matter.”
DeCanio goes on to warn of common mistakes you can avoid when meeting the ‘rents, including:

  • Don’t show up empty-handed.
  • Avoid any and all mentions of politics.
  • Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want Grandma to see.
  • Be nice to the family pets and little cousins.
  • Do your research – learn about the family.
  • Stay off your cell.
  • Don’t swear.
  • Go easy on the booze.
So if you and your honey decide it’s time to meet each other’s families this year, just remember: come with a smile, a bottle of fine sparkling cider and your phone on airplane-mode.

3 Workout Tips for Staying Fit "On-the-Go"

November 28, 2012/in Date Tips, Uncategorized /by CMB

By Jessica Barone @chai_haiku
Hey guys and gals, the holidays are coming up – and amidst all the commercial cheer is a secret threat to your dating scene. What could be a worse enemy for your favorite date outfit than the dreaded Heavy-Traveling & Heavy-Eating season? You’re forced to skip gym visits because you’re flying home for the holidays, you want to spend time with family, and – man, oh man – you forgot how good home-cooking could be!
So how do you find time to work out during this hectic holiday season? Inventively.
Here’s three strength n’ cardio exercises to do anywhere, any time. Stuck in an airport? no problem. Staying at hotel without a gym? Not to worry. Read on.
1) The Plank 5
Find a patch of floor that you can spread out on, get onto your feet and hands, back straight, and lower yourself onto your elbows. You’ll want a stop watch nearby.

  • Stay 30 seconds on both elbows
  • then turn onto your left elbow and do a side plank for 30 seconds,
  • then back onto both elbows for 30 seconds,
  • then onto your right elbow for 30 seconds,
  • and then finally finish with a last 30 seconds on both elbows.

Repeat five times with a minute rest in between. Enjoy those 7.5 minutes! For the more ambitious, double it and do a full minute for each plank position. image
2) The Jumping Jack of All Trades
This is great cardio drill to get you sweating. Get into the jumping jack position, feet shoulder-width apart, arms at your side to start.

  • Do twenty jumping jacks (jumping your feet wide apart and bringing your arms over your head each time)
  • followed by twenty quick, high knee kicks (as if running in place, bring each knee HIGH into your palm, above your hip, arms swinging in an easy, jogging motion). image
  • That’s one rep. In between, drop to the floor, do ten pushups, then leap up and do your next Jumping Jack and High Knee drill.

Repeat five times, take a full sixty-second break, then repeat another five times. Do more reps if you feel up to it, with a minute-rest in between each set.
3) The Squat of Atlas
image
For this you need a heavy object – a stack of books, even – something that you can lift comfortably, but gives your arms a burn after lifting five times.
image
Standing, spread your feet a little more than shoulder-width apart, heavy object(s) in hand, and squat deeply (the deeper the better), then rise and hold the heavy object above your head, hold for two seconds. Do ten reps, rest for thirty seconds, then another ten reps. Repeat between five to ten times.
NOTE: Always listen to your body and never rush a workout – no injuries this holiday season
