CMB Dawoon Kang Reddit AMA

Did You Miss Dawoon Kang’s Reddit ‘AMA’? Here’s 7 of the Best Q+A

January 24, 2019/in CMB Says, From the founders, Product, Tips, Tips on CMB /by Paige Butterfield

Coffee Meets Bagel’s very own Co-Founder and -CEO Dawoon Kang braved Reddit’s r/IamA January 22 to answer the questions on everyone’s mind: from tips for online dating, to where the name “Coffee Meets Bagel” came from. (And seriously, who’s the coffee? Who’s the bagel?!)

There are a lot of juicy questions and answers to sift through, so we’ve organized them and picked out the best. Here’s what happened after Dawoon Kang said, “Ask me anything!”

Tips for Online Dating

1. How Can I Increase My Match Rates on CMB?

Low match-rates are a big online dating frustration for many. However, CMB’s Dawoon has some helpful advice when it comes to making your profile more effective.

“When you answer profile questions, speak from your heart and talk honestly about what’s important about you and what you’re looking for in a date,” she said.

That’s because, Dawoon sums up, longer profiles are better than short ones. For more tips for online dating, skim Dawoon’s Reddit answer below.

Reddit: increase match rates

2. Is Dating Sunday Really the Busiest Day for Online Dating?

Dating Sunday isn’t just folklore! In fact, the co-founder says Dating Sunday “was so big for us that it actually broke a record — it was the biggest chat day in CMB history!” The next most-popular day for chatty Cathys? The following Sunday, January 13.

But if you forgot to log in during peak dates, don’t worry. All of January is a popular time for Coffee Meets Bagel, so you still have time to connect.

3. What Are Some of the Best Online Dating Icebreakers?

In person, singles are forced to think quickly when it comes to breaking the ices. But, online? While more time to perfect a great opening line sounds pleasant, it can also be overwhelming. Should you tell a joke? Use a pick up line? Ask a question about something on their profile?

Dawoon responded with enthusiasm. “Jokes are GREAT,” She said. “Awesome to make someone laugh!” Secondarily, commenting on someone’s profile is also a great way to hit it off. Just be sure not to be generic.

Once, Dawoon said, she used one of her favorite quotes from one of her favorite books, “The Alchemist,” on her profile. “I loved it when someone tried to guess where it was from,” Dawoon said. “It was a great convo starter.”Reddit: online dating icebreakers

4. What’s Dawoon’s Online Dating Philosophy?

Something Dawoon has said in the past is that, “It’s not about getting as many Likes as possible — it’s about getting one right like.” And, Dawoon suggested, that’s why Coffee Meets Bagel is razor-focused on curating limited quality matches instead of an endless pool of singles.

Another Redditor, “usctrojan415” gives further insight: “You don’t date online…at the end of the day you need to be able to transition offline effectively.”

Coffee Meets Bagel: How It Works and More

5. How Does ‘Discover’ Work?

To new community members, how Coffee Meets Bagel works might seem confusing. However, the platform is simple (even if our algorithm is complex)! Coffee Meets Bagel’s main draw is the “Suggested” section, where CMB’ers receive limited curated matches daily. The section is 100 percent free to use and to Like people.

But when CMB’ers want to search for extra Bagels using their own Advanced Filters (such as age, location, and education), they can choose to use the “Discover” section, too. In this section, it’s free to browse, but community members must use Beans or have a special subscription to Like people.

As “happyaboutlife100” puts it below, “[Discover] was meant as just an adjunctive part of CMB – i.e. the cherry on top.”

6. What’s CMB Doing About Online Dating Bots?

Scammers and bots are the reality for many dating apps, and Coffee Meets Bagel is no exception. When Redditor “superken00” asked what CMB’s strategy was for dealing with these fake profiles, Dawoon responded candidly. Take a look!

7. What Does the Name ‘Coffee Meets Bagel’ Mean?

Thank you, “dl2ew” for asking a question everyone is ready to get to the bottom of! What does the name “Coffee Meets Bagel” mean, and where did it come from? Is the premise that you’re supposed to meet up for coffee? Dawoon gives a three-fold answer — see what she says in the screen-cap.

OK — so we didn’t learn who the coffee and who the bagel is on Coffee Meets Bagel. But, perhaps the magic is in the mystery. To see more of Dawoon Kang’s “Best Of” from her Reddit AMA,

It's Raining Men - online dating

It’s Raining Men! How The Number Of Singles In Your City Affects Who Likes You

January 27, 2015/in Date Stats /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Timothy Sweetser

What if it really did rain men (or women)? No, seriously – imagine thousands of attractive, available singles suddenly fell from the sky and moved in to your town. How would this change your approach to dating? I don’t know about you, but with lots of new people potentially interested in me, I think I would become pickier about whom I liked, since I know that I now have more options. To test this hypothesis, I looked at how many men and women live in each major city across the U.S. (from the U.S. Census), and compared this to how often men and women on Coffee Meets Bagel LIKE their matches (using 800,000 matches). The idea is that the more singles of the opposite sex there are in your city, the more options you have, and therefore, you become pickier. I only looked at the dating statistics for straight users for now, but will investigate this for gay users soon.
Before I share the results, a quick refresher on how CMB works:  Every day at noon, CMB introduces members to one single (a.k.a. a “Bagel”), whom they must LIKE or PASS within 24 hours. These Bagels are friends of friends who also meet the member’s basic match preference criteria – gender, age, race, religion – which the members tell us when they first register with CMB. A mutual LIKE leads to a direct connection via a private phone line that the couple can use to communicate.
Now that you’re reminded of how CMB works, let’s see if having more options allows men and women to be pickier about their bagels. First, let’s see what men do.

Men’s Pickiness vs. Number of Women Available to Them

when men have more women to date, they are more picky about whom they like
As I predicted, men in cities like NYC and DC, where there are a lot of women available, LIKED their matches much less often than men in cities where there are fewer women (e.g., San Antonio and Denver). This doesn’t surprise me – when they have a lot of options to choose from, men can afford to be picky! Does having more options also make women pickier?

Women’s Pickiness vs. Number of Men Available to Them

when women have more men to date, they are less picky about whom they like
Things actually looked very different for women. Women in larger cities like New York and Los Angeles, with lots of men available, were actually less picky than women in smaller cities like Detroit or Seattle. This really surprised me: women in cities with less men are pickier? This is exactly the opposite of what I expected! Can it really be right?
What we haven’t accounted for is the competition factor: if you’re a woman in a big city with a lot of men to choose from, there are also a lot of other women going after the same men. Since having more options means having more competition, we need to compare pickiness to the relative availability of men and women, that is, the ratio of men to women, instead of the absolute number of men or women available. This simultaneously measures how many options and how much competition each gender faces for the opposite sex. With this new definition of availability, let’s take another look at how picky men are.

Men’s Pickiness vs. Relative Availability of Women

men in short supply (high demand) are more picky
With this new definition of availability, which accounts for competition, men are still behaving in the way I expect: in cities where men are relatively scarce (e.g., New York, DC, Boston), they are pickier than in cities where they dominate (e.g., Seattle). I highlighted only the biggest cities to illustrate the effect. This is what I expected, and matches what we saw before when we looked at pickiness versus absolute number of women to choose from. How do women respond to the relative availability of men?

Women’s Pickiness vs. Relative Availability of Men

the abundance or scarcity of men does not affect whether a women likes her match
As before, things looked very different for women. Women completely ignore the relative availability of the opposite sex when they check out their match. For example, although DC has more women than men, women in DC like their matches just as often as the women in San Francisco, where there are a lot more men than women.
****** We interrupt this blog post with a public service announcement to the women of San Francisco: don’t like so many guys!!! There are more of them than there are of you, which means you have the power to choose! When you see an illiterate guy still living in his parents’ basement, don’t hesitate to pass him over for the tall, suave, handsome gentleman. He’ll be lucky to have you. ******
We now return to our regularly scheduled blog post.

Conclusion

In summary, men are more likely to LIKE their match when women are in short supply, but for women, the scarcity or abundance of men doesn’t even register. Why could this be? Imagine that a man and a woman are (separately) looking for a date for Saturday night. If they can’t find a suitable date, his back-up plan is to hang out with the guys, while her back-up plan is to go out with her friends. What these findings suggest is that our imaginary guy strongly prefers to go out on a date – when it is hard to find a date (because there is a lot of competition and/or few options), he responds by LIKING more of his matches to increase his chances of finding someone to go out with. But our imaginary lady doesn’t care if her match is the last guy on Earth; she will only go out with him if she wants to, perhaps because she is equally happy to go out with her friends as to go out on a date. This is just my guess – why do you think men respond to the level of competition, or number of options, while women don’t? Let me know in the comments!

love at first sight

Is Love At First Sight Real?

December 11, 2014/in Date Tips /by Guest Blogger

Love at first sight! Hmmm!, have you ever experienced it before?  Do you even believe it can happen to you? Many people have different notions when it comes to falling in love at first sight. To some, it looks very possible, while to others, it is very ridiculous. Ok, let’s consult the opinions of psychologists to determine whether it is really possible to fall in love at first sight or not.
A study carried out by Stephanie Ortigue, Ph.D of Syracuse University and his colleagues from West Virginia University, and a Switzerland based University Hospital revealed that falling in love only takes about a fifth of a second to happen.
They discovered that love at first sight depends on the psychological state of mind. Some people fall in love at first sight because they believe love exists and are ready to fall in love. It will be difficult for people who do not believe in love to fall in love at first sight.  Again, you cannot fall in love at first sight if you are not in a good state of mind or you have loads of problems on your mind. At such time, falling in love will be the last thing on your mind.
It was also discovered that men have the tendency to fall in love at first sight more than women.  This is due to physical attractiveness factor. It is possible for a man to  fall in love at first sight because the more he looks at a woman for the first time, the more he will be interested in her. However, this is not true for most women. They tend to fall in love while in a relationship. A woman can like a man’s appearance, looks etc, but will hardly fall in love at that instant, but as a relationship develops, she tends to fall in love and is committed to the relationship.
Apart from scientific researches, is it really possible to feel love at first sight or is it “lust” that people experience. For us to discover the truth, we will first of all look at the definition of love and lust.
Love, according to the Wordweb dictionary is “a strong positive emotion of regard and affection”.  I love the definition given by Brene Brown, he said love is “an intangible connection between two people that feels exceptionally good”. Love is a good feeling. Most people describes it as having butterflies in your stomach.
Lust on the other hand is defined as “having a craving, appetite, or great desire for”.  Love and lust looks similar but they generate different actions and reactions. Most people refer to love at first sight as been lust and not love.  Lust can be very deceptive and most people develop it easily thinking they have found utmost chemistry with someone they are meeting for the first time. Most people are drawn to outward appearance and not considering other relevant factors that can make a relationship successful.  Those traits cannot be seen outside, they are inbuilt virtues.
People who fall in love at first sight have a preconceived notion of the kind of person they want to date and so when they come into contact with them at first sight, they tend to fall in love.
The true test of love is that it tends to endure, shines and grows with increased interest overtime, unlike lust which have the ability to fade away, shrinks and disappear within a short period of time.
A Greek-American baseball coach said, “if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you ain’t gonna find it, if you don’t know what is love, you probably ain’t gonna find that either”
Therefore, we can safely conclude that those who fall in love at first sight are looking for love and those who don’t may not be searching for it.  But, is this true, let’s hear your opinion.
