November 5, 2013/in Date Ideas /by Guest Blogger
Paintnite; first date idea; couple; creative painting

Looking for a creative date idea to impress your date? Check out PaintNite – a brand new painting adventure that takes art, wine, and dating to a Van Gogh level. Set in local bistros and bars in major cities throughout the U.S., PaintNite sets the stage for you and your bagel to enjoy a drink while discovering your artistic talents.

Let your inhibitions fade as you sip cocktails, brush strokes of paint across your canvas, and enjoy a spirited evening of fun. Taking yourself too seriously is left at the door as you playfully release your inner artiste. Professional artists select a painting for the evening and carefully guide you through the steps of creating your own beautiful tableau. All supplies – paints, brushes, canvas, and a smock – are provided.

PaintNite couple; colorful cocktail; looking for love; first date

PaintNite events occur often and the venues, paintings, and artists change frequently. All the details can be conveniently found on their website and tickets can be purchased online as well. Choose a painting that inspires you and bring your bagel along for this great first date idea. With a paintbrush in one hand and a cocktail in the other, you are primed for success.

Pro tip: Read up on the three pairs of complementary colors. It’ll take about two minutes tops and you’ll be sure to secretly impress your date.

OLDER THE BETTER-

It’s not an old book store, but more of a museum of all the magazines from the past. A new pop up shop in Soho is now open for all the curious culture and fashion lovers. One artful magazine archivist moved his $$-worth magazines to a new gallery space downtown. If you’re a fan of GQ, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Details, Vogue, and yes, Playboy this is where you can go to see those well aged editions that you probably never seen before. The gallery space itself is worth strolling into, so take a break at this chic not-so-much of a bookstore while you’re in town.

JAMES FRANCO…HE’S HERE!

You’ve seen him on the big screen and if you were lucky caught him in between classes near NYU. Franco is an actor, artist, and also an author with his second book ready for us. In 2010 he had his first solo exhibit Dangerous Book Four Boys, a mixed media event. His second book is titled the same and it brings the entire exhibit into one piece and lays it down in one book. You can purchase the book to attend the event to see and hear from Franco. Start your weekend with Franco— done.

Zine? Huh?

When I first saw this I went “huh?” for a second too. According to the Anchor Archive Zine Library, “Zines are self-published magazines made outside of mainstream press and media, by all kinds of people about all kinds of things.” So if it’s a Zine Fest, I can imagine bunch of fun, creative, dynamic and colorful people gather. This is the first of an annual gathering of zine lovers and creators. It’s expecting more than 60 writers and artists to share their illustrations, writings, photography and any other work they want to show the world.

Mesmerizing photos to video

March 28, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

Here is another art exhibition New Yorkers should be excited about.

Oded Hirsch is having his first solo exhibition: nothing new, here in New York and he has the art community buzzing.

“In a series of videos and photographs completed over the past few years, Hirsch presents seemingly purposeless collective endeavors, performed in real time, where the focus is more on the process than on the outcome of the undertaking. Questioning the very notion of “togetherness” and utopia, Hirsch produces works that, while profound and political, are also intimate and moving,” Thierry Goldberg Gallery explains.

Not the same Andy Warhol

March 28, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

It is not an overstatement if we say Andy Warhol is one of the most well known Pop artists. The painting of Campbell’s soup cans Marilyn Monroe are all too familiar with us. However Andy Warhol had more to him than just his paintings. He was a well respected photographer himself, and this exhibition, “Andy Warhol: Photographer” is a chance for the public to see.

“Andy Warhol: Photographer” is an exhibition of 143 unique prints and is the first gallery show that purely focuses on his photographic products.

If you’ve been to MoMA one too many times and want to see a different side of Warhol’s works try going out to this exhibition this week!

Escape into Opulence

March 23, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

The Frick Collection

Tired of your studio, or your one bedroom flex apartment you share with 2 other roommates? See where the real high class, wealthy, and cultured people used to live back in the days.

The Frick Collection is an art museum now, but was first built in 1913 as Robber baron Henry Clay Frick’s- yes that’s his name- mansion. The Frick Collection holds many traditional painting all from Monet’s pieces to Renoir’s. There’s also a garden court where you can relax and enjoy the quietness and enjoy the spring breeze. Of course it has a fountain, like all great mansions do!

My favorite part of this mansion/art museum is that it is a great wedding venue. You have to be a private member but if you are, this is a choice different from a castle but with the same classy opulence anybody would be in awe of.

WHERE: One E. 70th St. (70 St/5th Ave)
