CMB 2.0 Is Here! Thoughts from the team

What makes Coffee Meets Bagel different from other dating apps is our relentless focus on creating meaningful connections. That focus is why we’re excited to announce the launch of CMB 2.0 – our biggest app upgrade to date. Here’s what’s new:
Introducing Instant Messaging
You can now chat with connected Bagels right inside our app via a private chat room. No more dropped SMS!
Instant messaging will also help us use data even better to facilitate meaningful post connection interactions so they turn into real conversations, real meet ups, and real relationships.
For example, after analyzing over a million text messages exchanged by our members, we found that those who exchanged texts within the first 24 hours were 1.4x more likely to exchange their real phone numbers. They also sent 2.6x more texts than those who didn’t communicate within 24 hours. In response, we developed a system to encourage members to text on their first day of connection. With in-app chat we’ll be able to use even more insights to turn meaningful connections into meaningful conversations.
What won’t change is the 7 day expiration of private chat rooms. One of our members’ favorite features, expiration keeps the momentum going between pairs.
Bonus Bagels
CMB 2.0s second major feature is Bonus Bagels. We believe our one-match-a-day model works better because it forces pairs to consider each other more carefully and make more thoughtful decisions. However, we noticed that certain members who know exactly who they want and tend to pass on multiple Bagels, making it harder for our algorithm to learn what they’re looking for. With bonus bagels, these members will receive a few extra bagels a day. While members can still only LIKE one bagel a day (we want connections to remain special!), our goal is to deliver a bagel you LIKE every day. P.S.: It’s time to stock up on those Coffee Beans because you will need them to unlock Bonus Bagels!

5 Truths of Online Dating In College

It’s a weird concept: to be dating “online” as a college student. Most of my friends met their significant others organically, but I have a handful of friends who found their special someone via dating apps, even as a junior in college. I decided to use Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB), and here are the observations that I made.

1. Dating In College Is Pretty Terrible

It’s really difficult to meet people organically because everyone is sewn to their phones and thinking of what their next move is going to be on Instagram or Snapchat. Guys, at least at my school, are pretty rude as soon as the sun goes down. We’re expected to find ‘the one’ and be on the track to marriage by age 22, yet all college students want to do is grind at a bar, go home with someone and never have to see them again. A lot of 20-somethings are just looking for a hookup, and with CMB, you know that the person is most likely looking for something a little more serious and mature.

2. Meeting People Is Really Difficult In the “Real World”

Yes, networking is incredibly easy when you’re in the startup world, but to meet potential lovers is tough. You can’t tell if someone is interested, not interested or just being a creep. Some of my friends use dating apps just to make friends. If it doesn’t work out romantically, there is no shame in befriending an ex-potential date. You may still be compatible, just not the way you had originally intended to be.

3. There’s A Stigma (or is there?)

When I first told my friends and family that I would be working at CMB everyone was totally fine with it. When they found out I was actually using the dating app, they weren’t nearly as excited. When I burst my college bubble by moving to SF, I realized that everyone here is signed up for at least one dating app, and if they aren’t, it’s because they’ve been in a serious relationship for forever and are no longer in the market. Back home, people weren’t nearly as turned on to the idea of online dating, but here, it’s completely the norm. It bothers me when people complain about not having a significant other, but at the end of the day they’re doing absolutely nothing to find someone. Isn’t it strange that meeting someone at a bar is considered more romantic than finding them online? In my opinion, users of dating apps are actually being proactive about finding someone. Online dating shouldn’t feel “artificial” because it is just an alternative way to meet people. Don’t complain if you aren’t trying!

4. Online Dating Takes Away The Nerves

Call me crazy, but I get super nervous meeting people for the first time because you never know if you’re just going to be friends or something more. Eye contact is one of the first ways to tell if someone likes you, and that can be a tricky gesture to understand clearly. CMB helps you make that connection without the pressure. You have 24 hours to respond, and if you don’t like them or they don’t like you, it’s not a big deal at all. If you do like each other, you’re connected immediately and the ball is in your court from there. Once it’s settled that you both like each other, why wouldn’t you say hello?!

5. We’re Lazy & This Is Easy

With CMB, you get one Bagel everyday. All you have to do is click LIKE or PASS. It takes less than 1 minute and literally could not be any easier. My roommates and I could spend all day on Tinder if we were bored enough- just sifting through guys like playing cards. But I don’t want to swipe all day, and I don’t have all day to spend on dating apps- I’m a busy bee. It takes 10 seconds to get a Bagel and decide whether or not you like them. It’s just another app connecting me with people and making my life easier.

Of course there is absolutely no bias here, but CMB really was the best app that I used as a single gal in SF. It took away my nerves and gave me a better understanding of how amazing online dating is.

How I Met The Love Of My Life Through Coffee Meets Bagel

Caleigh, a health care integrator from NYC, initially decided to try Coffee Meets Bagel, a new dating app, just to prove to one of her girlfriends that she would practice what she preached. After going on a date with one other guy, Caleigh found Joe. Before she clicked “Like” on Joe’s Coffee Meets Bagel profile, she determined that she would only start a new relationship if it was bound to be better than her past relationships. Her first impression of Joe when he came up as her Bagel that day? “He carried an air about him where I thought-hmmmm there is potential”.

Although it took him longer than expected to ask her out on a date, that potential was enough to keep Caleigh interested. The two met one Friday night, a few weeks after the initial text, and hopped around from one spot to another, staying up til the early hours of the morning talking, laughing and dancing. It sounds cliché, but Caleigh knew that it was “click” at first sight. She knew after one date that Joe was the one. We’re jealous over here, too.

First comes love, then comes… marriage!? Caleigh and Joe woke up on Saturday, January 12, 2014, got coffee, and took their dog for a walk in Central Park. Joe said that he wanted to take a different route. I’ll let Caleigh tell the rest ;)

“We saw an incredibly talented musician singing and stopped to listen. We gave him a dollar and then this guy shut his guitar case and the words “WILL YOU MARRY ME” were on top. He had even changed the words to the song but I hadn’t noticed! Joe fell to one knee and I was speechless. He had someone take a video in the background of the whole thing. Lots of people witnessed it and clapped and cheered. I said yes, of course, and then he surprised me by telling me that my immediate family from Canada was in town to celebrate. It was incredible and very well planned. It’s our love story, and it’s perfect :)”

Flash forward a few months and the wedding is set! Caleigh and her “hubs” Joe will be tying the knot on August 17, 2014.

Caleigh’s advice for CMB users still looking for the one? “Don’t pigeon hole yourself to subscribing to ‘a type’. Give most things you would not usually consider a try- one shot, that’s all. And be honest, because one’s true colors will show eventually anyway.”

We love that advice, Caleigh! And we are so happy that you two found each other.
