CMB Men's Series: 5 Pocket Friendly Date Ideas in NYC

September 25, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC, Uncategorized /by CMB

CMB Men’s Series is original content dedicated to (confused) men and dating in the city.
We kickoff our series with a guest post by Amanda Raye, Editor-in-Chief of Broke & Chic. Visit her at www.brokeandchic.com and @brokeandchic.
New York City is one of the hardest places to find your soul mate. There are simply just too many fish, or should I say Bagels?
NYC is also notoriously known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world, which is why the price of romance won’t always mix with your budget. Girls tend to be very picky in the Big Apple but don’t fret, here are 5 ways to take your girl out on a dime and STILL impress her.
1. Try Some Afternoon Tea

This is a daily activity done by our friends across the pond. It typically happens between 3 and 5pm and consists of tea, crumpets, scones and cucumber sandwiches! Luckily for New York, the West Village is bustling with “High Tea” shops!
Head on over to Bosie Tea Parlor on Morton and Bleecker. If you want to go all out, the High Tea experience costs $51 for two. If you want to be kinder to your budget and still not look cheap, order two pots of tea and a few scones. That’ll keep you under $20. Then, just sit down and talk about all the places you’d like to visit one day.

2. Go International

Take her on a tour of Europe in your own city. Head on over to Sockerbit in the West Village, a candy shop that has all things Swedish! Grab a bag, fill it with as much candy as possible and then sit on the bench outside and try all your new treats.
If you and your girl aren’t huge fans of sweets, head on over to Shi Eurasia, an international grocery store in the Lower East Side. You’ll both feel as if you’ve been transported to Piccadilly sans the nine hour flight. This grocery store has food and snacks from not only England but Scotland, Australia, Spain, Poland, Ukraine, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Italy…I could go on. Buy a bag of Worcester Sauce potato chips, a bottle of espresso soda and a green tea Kit-Kat bar and wander around the LES. Don’t forget to poke your head into all the cute boutiques and art galleries!
This could turn into a perfect afternoon with only a $20 price tag — subway tickets included!

3. Street Art Tour

Any art fanatic would swoon over this idea. Grab a coffee together and Instagram all the works of art you can find. If you’re not searching for a specific artist, get off the Morgan L stop. There happens to be a ton of great street art in that part of Williamsburg! For a more planned approach, look up where all the Banksy pieces are in NY; there are quite a few of them in downtown Manhattan as well as in DUMBO.
No matter what, make sure to do some research ahead of time!

4. Bring her to the Museum of the Moving Image

This is a very under-glorified museum in Queens. Admission is free on Friday’s from 4-8pm. This museum is the country’s only museum dedicated to the art, history, technique, and technology of the moving image in all its forms. There is also a ton of relics from old movie sets including Star Wars and The Black Swan (geeky girls will especially love it)!
This could turn into a fun and romantic evening for two, under $30!

5. Be a tourist in your own city

If you live Uptown and very rarely find yourself below 14th, or live in Queens and the word “Williamsburg” sounds like a foreign country, exploring is a fun and romantic way to change that!
Take your girl to a neighborhood you both know nothing about. Walk around, check out a few quaint boutiques and grab an affordable bite to eat at a restaurant neither of you have ever heard of. It’ll be like visiting a different city!

Sunday Spotlight: Claire Mazur

July 21, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

In this week’s Sunday Spotlight, we hit up Claire Mazur, the co-founder of Of a Kind, “an art gallery for emerging designers” that carries exclusive limited editions. Of a Kind selects designers whose work it loves and features them on the site, one at a time (sound familiar?). As the first ever store to be launched on Tumblr, Claire & Of a Kind have been covered by WWD, DailyCandy, the Today Show and more.
Even though Claire is currently not single (sorry gents!), we couldn’t think of anyone better to get fashion & date tips than Claire—she’s been in the fashion industry since 16, after a chance encounter with Donna Karan. And being in the fashion industry also means lots of opportunities for social events at the hottest spots in the city!

1. What is the must-have accessories for men this summer that can elevate his looks?

Men need to make sure their summer shoe game is on point. This is, evidently, a struggle for them. I don’t think flip-flops are acceptable for dudes, and, in general, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a guy who can pull off any type of sandal. I think the single-color slip-on Vans (#1) are a nice and inexpensive solution—white is great if you can keep them clean. If you want something a little more substantial and are willing to shell out a bit more money, these Common Projects sneakers (#2) are also great.

2. Same for ladies?

I rarely leave home without my jean jacket in the summer—it goes with everything I wear and it’s clutch in combating the A/C-induced whiplash when moving from outdoors to indoors. I love this vintage one by reformation (#3) which they updated with lace sleeves—so perfect for summer.

Something else I’ve been over-wearing most this summer are the wren batik print shorts in red (#4), which I purchased from Of a Kind. They are ridiculously comfortable and light—and also make me look like I’m putting in more effort than throwing on a pair of jean cut-offs.

3. (Bonus for New Yorkers!) What is your idea of the best Sunday date in NYC?

Almost anything that tears me away from the computer and my inbox would be great! I love a good bloody mary, and I’ve been dying to try the one at Joseph Leonard, so I’d want to head there for a big brunch. Then we’d walk it off on our way over to the Megaplex at Union Square to see Magic Mike. I never get to see movies when they’re still in the theatres, and this one seems like it would be well-served by the big screen. This all assumes the weather is gross and I’ll want to escape into the air-conditioning, since that’s New York’s M.O. lately. On the off-chance that it’s pleasant out I’d love to try the free kayaking on the Hudson

New York: Pink Party

July 18, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC, Uncategorized /by CMB

Pranna’s romantically lit Cellar Bar was filled with more Bagels than a New York City deli.  We were elated by the turn out and the positive feedback expressed by our members.

At CMB we believe it “only takes one.”  One Match, One Connection…and as we’ve witnessed yesterday: One Party.  Beautiful connections were made as our Bagels enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres, perfectly mixed drinks (by that dashing bartender with a striking resemblance to Ryan Reynolds) and mood setting beats by our very own DJ Dee Dre.

Want to re-live the night (or for our Boston members, see what’s in store)?  Listen to the official Pink Party Mixtape as you scroll through these pictures.  Make sure you visit our Facebook page to view all photos.

Sunday Spotlight: Ashley Rudolph

July 14, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

In this week’s Sunday Spotlight, we hit up Ashley Rudolph, the lady behind What Would Ashley Wear?, a fashion blog featured on the New York Times, Refinery29, New York Fashion Week and many others. She is one of the founding members of Blogger’s Collective, a group of NY fashion bloggers who curate great fashion, beauty, and lifestyle content to their readers.

Ashley first became interested in fashion blogs while traveling abroad, when she realized thru reading local blogs that fashion transcends all international borders.  For those of us who aspire to be fashionista ourselves, Ashley advises to “find some bloggers that you absolutely love (here are her favorites) and start figuring out what silhouettes and shapes work best for you.”

In the summer, you will spot Ashley in denim cutoffs, cute wedges, and a tank top/blouse (Adorable!).

1.  Could you recommend this summer’s best “first date look” for our ladies?

For a first date, I’d suggest focusing on wearing something that you know looks great on you (a favorite dress, top, pair of shoes, etc). The last thing you want to be worried about is whether or not your outfit looks ok! I thought I’d mix up my perfect first date outfit by incorporating this season’s hottest trend: animal print!

What I’m wearing: This top is actually a vintage slip dress I purchased from Closet Rich. I love the color and the versatility (a dress that can double as a top? Yes please!). I paired the vintage slip with a midi skirt from American Apparel, leopard print ballerina flats, a vintage satchel bag, and red lipstick for an extra pop.

2.For our gents: what is the trendiest gift items we can buy for their Bagel & girl friends now?

One of the trendiest gift items a guy can buy for a girl right now is some arm candy. Try a wrap watch from La Mer, a Michael Kors rose gold watch or a cool cuff bracelet.

3. (For New Yorkers) What is your idea of the best Sunday date in NYC?

My ideal date would start at the Highline, it’s a great place to walk, take in the awesome view, get to know each other, and enjoy some gelato! Then we’d head to Westville Chelsea for lunch, it’s one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat in the city and it has a pretty laid back and inviting atmosphere. The icing on the cake would be a trip to Raines Law Room, a speakeasy with a banging cocktail menu and a sexy vibe. It’s truly a hidden gem!

4.(For Bostonians) What is your idea of the best Sunday date in Boston?

My ideal date in Boston would start with brunch at Upstairs on the Square. I’ve never been but I’ve heard so many great things and a handful of my friends have recommended it to me, so I’m itching to go! I love art, so I’d opt for a trip to the Gardner Museum after brunch. The courtyard is beautiful and you can get lost in the surrounding galleries (in a good way of course!). I love the Liberty Hotel so ending the date with drinks at Alibi would be perfect!

1.    What is your recommended best “first date” look for guys?

“Don’t try too hard, that’s my main recommendation. A debonair, chic yet comfortable look will go a long way. It’s important to show the other person that your personality is interesting enough that you don’t need to bring your 3 pieces suit to the table. Nothing beats a nice clean shirt (iron it, please) with a fitted pair of jeans.

I like Le Mommessin from Aksel Paris for shirt because it’s comfortable yet classy, it has a nice sky blue color but brown details on the cuffs and collar, she will be impressed, guaranteed. For jeans, I recommend Diesel  in darker color. I just love their cut, I usually go with their Viker style. Finish it off with a pair of espadrilles, a summer staple for the sharp-dressed men.”

2.    For our ladies: what is the trendiest gift items we can buy for the guys in their lives?

“I recommend grooming products. If your man does not use any, get him some. He might be a bit resistant at the beginning, but once he tries, he will never go back. Moisturizer and face scrub are MUST. I recommend Menaji or Pacific Shaving Cream. All of their products are generally very good.”

3. What is your idea of the best Sunday date in NYC?

“ I would start at Cafe Select on Lafayette and Kenmare, their eggs benedict is perfect. Then walk around to get some brioche at Balthazar, it’s simply one of the best bakeries in New York. No need to go to the restaurant, just the small shop in it. My next stop would be the rooftop terrace of the James Hotel to enjoy some rose with a nice view of Manhattan. Can’t beat that.”

Sunday Spotlight: Lindsey Jones

July 1, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

In this week’s Sunday Spotlight, we hit up Lindsey Jones, the Founder & CEO of Lindsey Jones Makeup Artistry for some makeup & grooming tips for a first date!

The San Diego native began her career in New York City, working directly with Bobbi Brown, assisting her in major shoots. In 2010, she founded Lindsey Jones Makeup Artistry, offering pretty, durable, studio-quality makeup to clients for weddings, galas, fundraisers, and other monumental events.

Lindsey has worked on thousands of features, face, and skin tones. She now ranks #1 among all makeup artists in Manhattan on Yelp.com. She describes her makeup style as “classically pretty: fresh cheeks, pink lips, soft lashes, wide-open peepers”

Finally, did we mention that she is a CMB member? Guys, you might get her as your Bagel on your lucky day :)

To keep up with her latest & greatest, follow Lindsey on twitter @ljonesmakeup

1. For our ladies: Lindsey did a make over on one of CMB’s co-founders Dawoon! Click on the links below to check out the videos.

Lesson #2: Perfect first date FACE

Lesson #3: Perfect first date EYES

Lesson #4: Perfect first date LIPS

2. Could you give us some grooming tips for guys?

Skin: Make sure your skin isn’t flaky (slightly hydrated but not greasy). Oil of Olay Beauty Fluid and Bobbi Brown’s Oil Control Lotion are affordable options to hydrate your skin. If you feel like splurging, try trending makeup products 2019!

Brows: Don’t over do it! They should be a little bushy, not too done. Get an angled brush or an empty/clean mascara wand to brush your brow up, not downwards. (Laura Mercier makes a great mascara wand brush, or the next time you’re shopping at a makeup counter, ask the makeup artist for a mascara wand, they have hundreds of disposable mascara wands that you can resuse.)

Then apply a brow powder. As a rule of thumb, the brow powder should be the color of your roots.

Lips: If your lips are chapped, while you’re brushing your teeth, brush you lips with your toothbrush too. Then apply a thin layer of Chapstick (My favorite is Cherry Chapstick!)

3. (Bonus for New Yorkers!) What is your idea of the best Sunday date in NYC?

“My idea of the perfect Sunday date is to take the Ferry to Governor’s island, bike around the island together, then to get ice cream and just chill. After relaxing, it would be fun to finish the night with some dancing at a place with live music!”

Sunday Spotlight: Dick Talens

June 24, 2012/in Date Ideas, NYC /by CMB

In this week’s New York’s Sunday Spotlight, we hit up Dick Talens – the co-founder of Fitocracy, the revolutionary fitness social network – for some fitness tips for the summer and for awesome date ideas in New York.

If you have not heard of Fitocracy by now, you don’t know what you are missing out.  Two pictures are worth a 1,000 words: Fitocracy transformed Dick from here to up there. He looks so good now, he makes Jared Fogle’s transformation laughable (OK, we exaggreate a bit).

Once a fat, video-game obessed geek (a cute one nevertheless), Dick says he used pure geekery to train himself – visualizing himself as a video game character while spending many hours nerding out on nutrition and exercise.  His experience training together with his fellow nerd and best friend from college, Brian Wang, was the basis for their company Fitocracy, which they founded together in 2010.

1. It’s the summer & I need a quick way to get in shape! Any tangible advice/recommended routine? Please tell us it’s possible…

“When you say “get in shape for the summer”, I’m going to assume like 99% of people, you mean “look good naked”.  There is only one effective way to do that (and no, it does not involve running):

I. Focus on your diet.  If you’re trying to lose fat, figure out how many calories you need in a day and eat a few hundred calories below that.  Keep protein high to maximize satiety, increase your caloric expenditure, and build lean mass.

II. Focus on compound exercises, namely squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.  These exercises will make you build your ideal body faster than anything on the planet.  For the ladies, don’t worry, you won’t get bulky from lifting.  In fact, the opposite is true.  A beginners program like Starting Strength is pretty good.”

2. What is the best healthy yet yummy food spot you like to go to in NYC?

“One of my favorite restaurants is Mooncake Foods in Soho.  It’s a bit hole-in-the-wall-y, but that’s probably the reason that it’s the best bang for your buck.  It’s cheap, has a good amount of protein, delicious, and most of all it’s a healthy crapton of food in every order.

3.  Where is the best place to work out & also meet cool people? (OK you can say Fitocracy)

“Ummm, definitely Fitocracy.  Well, you can’t work out physically on Fitocracy, but you can meet the coolest, most inspirational people on there when it comes to fitness.  We’ve got guys who’ve lost hundreds of pounds, 70-year-olds who lift, an amputee who deadlifts twice his body weight, and even the reigning Miss New York (who used Fitocracy to get in shape for her pageant) is on there.”

4. What is your idea of the best Sunday date in NYC?

“Bottomless brunch on Arte Cafe on the Upper West Side. Going to Crumbs for cupcakes afterwards. Then, people watching in Central Park and counting how many dogs look eerily similar to their owners (if you haven’t tried this, you’re missing out). Finally, an intense lifting session at the gym finishing with post-workout sushi.”
