Best Urban & Fun Date Ideas in Boston: Part I

April 30, 2013/in Boston /by CMB

Welcome back to Urban Dating: Easy & fun date ideas from urban experts!
Our recent posts have included Los Angeles and Chicago. Now we’re off to Boston with MC Slim JB, a witty food critic who gave us 3 different fun date ideas. Here’s the first one!
MC Slim JB icon
Who: MC Slim JB, a long time Boston resident who was born in New England.
Why you should listen to him: MC Slim JB is a restaurant critic for several publications including the Boston Phoenix. He writes under the pen name MC Slim JB, an alias that reflects a long-ago youthful interest in old-school hip-hop.
Dating Advice from a Food Nerd: “From my dating days to married life, being a food geek who knows lots of good places to eat and drink has proven invaluable for cultivating romance. For a first or second date, I recommend meeting somewhere for a drink, followed by dinner. You want to keep it simple, have a conversation in a convivial setting, get to know each other. I also favor having an idea for a nightcap in your back pocket, so you can extend the evening if it’s going well without committing the faux pas of being a table camper at the restaurant.”
First Date: Drinks at Green Street, dinner at Mary Chung, nightcap at Brick & Mortar
Central Square is easy to get to, has cheap parking for someone driving in, and has tons of Cambridge’s famously casual, laid-back, youthfully hip atmosphere. The bar at Green Street (the restaurant) is always buzzing with an eclectic crowd, and the drinks menu reflects that audience, with great beers, inexpensive but quality wines by the glass, and a craft-cocktail ethos that will satisfy even serious cocktail geeks. (Ask for the “big list” for a dazzling selection of historical cocktails.)
green-street_s345x230
After a pop here, head around the corner to Mary Chung, a local Chinese institution, serving slightly Westernized versions of Sichuan and Hunan cuisine. It’s bare-bones, affordable and delicious. Standouts include suan la chow show (pork-filled steamed dumplings on top of bean sprouts in a fiery soy-based sauce), dun dun noodles (wheat noodles in a spicy sauce of ground pork – stir it up well before sharing), and Grandma’s pie (usually on the specials menu, a scallion pancake stuffed with minced bok choy). There’s also plenty of well-executed American-Chinese dishes like General Gau’s chicken and crab rangoon to satisfy more timid taste buds. Closed Tuesdays.
chi13
For a nightcap, head across the street to Brick & Mortar, located upstairs through an unmarked door just to the left of Central Kitchen. This dimly-lit hideaway, with its sinuous copper-topped bar and vinyl album sides spun by the bartenders, features more great drinks for every taste, including some dangerously smooth chilled shots: try a Double Wide (Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola syrup).

October 3, 2012/in Boston, Date Ideas, Uncategorized /by CMB

Boston’s 3rd Annual Local Craft Brewfest
For those in need of a last minute date idea as well as libations after a hard week’s work, check out Boston’s 3rd Annual Local Craft Brewfest this Friday on the Boston waterfront. The Brewfest is a prelude to the Local Food Festival being held on Sunday.
Did you know that in July, Boston was named the 9th Best Beer City in the World?  The Brewfest will showcase local craft brewers and highlight brews, wines, distilleries, and artisan craft beverages made locally. More than 50 brews and local food vendors will be featured.  Of GQ’s list of 50 Beers to Try Right Now, two breweries that made the cut will be participating (Smuttynose Brewery from Portsmouth, NH and Sam Adams).
This event will be a great opportunity for you and your date to meet brewers, vintners, and local eateries that are as passionate about local brews as you are!  If you want to extend your date into the night, visit one of the best beer bars in the nation in Cambridge.
When: Friday October 5th.from 6:00-9:30pm
Where: Moakley Courthouse, Boston Waterfront – 1 Courthouse Way, Boston
For tickets, visit: http://localcraftbrew.eventbrite.com/

For those looking for an all-day activity this weekend, check out the 3rd Annual Local Food Festival on Sunday taking place right in the heart of Boston!
The free festival will feature over 150 vendors, including chef demos and a variety of $5 locally-grown eats.  This will be a great way to spend time with your date enjoying local tastings prepared by well-known local chefs featuring fresh, local fruits, herbs, vegetables, seafood, and locally-grown meats.  You can also sample beer, mead and wine from local brewers.
Be sure to check out the ‘Seafood Throwdown’ at 12:30pm, where two chefs engage in an ‘Iron Chef’ like battle with a secret seafood ingredient.

Boston: Short Day Trip Date to Newport

August 3, 2012/in Boston, Date Ideas /by CMB

Founded in 1630 by wayward Puritan colonists from England, Boston is one of the oldest cities in America.  So it’s had a lot of time to establish itself as a world-class city and New England’s epicenter of gastronomy – in other words: plenty of date options.

However, what do you do when you run out of date ideas?  Fact is, our Boston members are comprised of refined tastemakers who are “in the know.”  They are fully aware that the Tip Tap Room has nothing to do with tap dancing.  They do not consider chillin’ with colonially-clad women at Paul Revere’s crib as conducive to romantic dates. They are busy professionals who are tired of waiting in line to get to the roofdeck of Legal Harborside (btw, ask for the Boston Strong Boy or The Purple Jesus if you are patient enough to wait – they’re life changing).

So back to the question: what do you do?

Here is the first installment of date inspirations for day trips to get you away from the city but close enough to have you back home in time for Olympics Women’s Trampoline.

Where: Newport, RI (Goat Island)

Distance: 71 miles, 1 hour 19 minutes

Accommodations (if necessary): Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island – unfortunately no goats (we looked…seriously)

Eats: order a draft Newport Storm to wash down the $1 Oysters at Celtica Public House.  Also, it’s totally worth spending the night just for the crab benedict breakfast from Black Pearl’s waterside patio.

Must See: (1) visit a local vineyard (2) pull $ from your own Mansion Fund to tour the Famous Newport Mansions (3) absolutely skip (1) & (2) if you can’t make it back to Goat Island before sunset.  It’s not worth running the risk of missing the most romantic moment of the trip…watching the sunset over Narragansett Bay. It’s truly breathtaking. @coffeembagel Instagram pics below:

CMB Tip: View the sunset from Pineapples on the Bay, but if the one-man-band’s covers of 90’s alternative classics become too intense, take a short stroll over to the historical Newport Harbor Lighthouse.

Sunday Spotlight: Dave Eisenberg

July 8, 2012/in Boston, Date Ideas /by CMB

Meet Dave Eisenberg, #4 in Boston’s Sunday Spotlight: the BostInno journalist shares his favorite date spots in Boston.

Graduate of Emerson and a true Bostonian through and through, Dave loves to write about what Boston people care about, ranging from interview with Jim Koch (founder of Boston Beer Co.) to topics as obscure as lincense plate scanning camera, and of course, the Boston launch of fascinating services like Coffee Meets Bagel! :) Prior to BostInno, Dave blogged & reported for Boston Phoenix & GateHouse Media. As a big Rolling Stone fan, he attributes his interest in journalism to the legendary magazine.

Thank you Dave for sharing your date ideas! You always have a special place in our heart as the FIRST journalist ever to write about us.

1. What are some of the best hangout spots in Boston that are good for dates?

“Drink. Be forewarned. Drink isn’t cheap. But it is a cool experience. The bartenders walk through your order and mix cocktails to cater to your taste. Maybe too fancy for a first date, but it’s a cool spot to check out with someone you’re getting familiar with. It’ll be a fun learning experience for the both of you and you’ll leave with a happy buzz.

Second is Beehive. What’s sexier than jazz music? Nothing, right? Between the live music and art space backdrop, there will always be something to drive conversation between the two of you. After all, you can learn a lot about a person by listening to what they have to say about art and music.”

2. How about your favorite restaurants in Boston for date?

“Beef barbacoa tacos and the El Diablo margarita. That’s all that really needs to be said about Lone Star Taco Bar in Allston. It’s ideal for a first date as it offers the casual atmosphere you want to create when first meeting someone, while remaining classy enough to make both of you feel that your date is the special occasion it should be.

The Regal Beagle in Brookline is intimate and has delicious food. It’s upscale, but comfortable – keep it casual with the bar bites menu and cocktails. Added bonus: it’s in Coolidge Corner, which is just an awesome all around place full of shops and has an amazing movie theater. Go for a walk, catch a flick and make plans for date two.”

3. What is your idea of the best Sunday date in Boston?

“It’s summer. Stay outside. Look for a place to get some lunch with a patio and people watch (read: make fun of passersby together). As an Emerson grad, I’ve a sweet spot in my heart for Sweetwater Tavern, but it’s a nice date spot, too. The place is kind of hidden, but the ally its in is heavily trafficked. You’ll be right next to the Common as well. It might be cheesy. Maybe obvious. But go for a walk through the Common. Get some ice cream. You don’t need extravagant plans to have a good time or impress someone you’re just getting to know.”

1.Could you recommend this summer’s best “first date look” for our ladies?

For day dates, I love little jersey dresses — they’re simple, comfortable, and can be super sexy while still leaving a lot to the imagination. This fun drape front striped dressfrom Gap can be easily dressed up or down with a few simple accessories. I like this with an easy pair of low wedges (cobblestone streets and stilettos just don’t get along ladies, just accept it), a skinny belt in a bright color, and a wristful of <a “””href=”http://www.shopbop.com/rita-bangle-set-zeffira/vp/v=1/845524441940337.htm?folderID=2534374302060428&fm=other-shopbysize-viewall&colorId””” =10186″ target=”_blank”>bangles.

Finally, I love a good swipe of bright lipstick to add a bit of glow to the face. Tone down the rest of your makeup but a sweet soft coral like this one by Make Up For Ever (#N41 Watermelon will keep him wondering).

2. Great! For our gentlemen?

I think one of the smartest investments a guy can make is a great fitting pair of jeans in an appropriate day-to-night wash. I’m a big fan of APC denim on men. They’re classic, they’re simple, and they’re built to last. Barneys has a great selection of the New Standard in a variety of washes or you can grab a pair online from APC.fr.

Fred Perry on Newbury and the J.Crew Men’s Shop in Copley are also both safe bets for day date staples. They’re always full of dapper dudes that are knowledgeable enough to put any wary shopper into a fitted shirt that suits them. I dig a fresh and unexpected stripe like this one by Saturdays Surf x J.Crew ($108 at J Crew.com) for the summer. A boat shoe is an un-fussy footwear choice (these Jack Spade ones made in collaboration with Maine-based Rancourt & Co. are awesome, $250 at 129 Newbury St. ) and I’m always a sucker for a weekend tie (I’m obsessed with this chambray one by R.C.P., $75 at ReadsClothingProject.com).

3. What is your idea of the best Sunday date in Boston?

The ICA recently opened a new exhibit featuring the work of Josiah McElheny, a locally-bred artist who works primarily in glass and mirrors, as an extension of his permanent piece at the museum, “Czech Modernism Mirrored and Reflected Infinitely”. I’ve deemed the exhibit (named “Some Pictures of the Infinite”) the Chihuly of this summer because it’s incredibly accessible and beautiful even if you don’t know anything about art.

After the museum, the Waterfront is a fantastic area to not feel like you’re trapped in the heat of the city but still have easy access to plenty of dining and activities. Quick bites to eat that are easily affordable include the always-room-for-more Flour where BLT is easily one of my top 10 sandwiches of all time, or the simple bar bites available at one of the many dockside joints where I swear the view makes up for the lack of culinary creativity.

Want to wrap things up? Drink is a classic option for cocktails that keep conversation flowing and the evening going. However, if all else fails — Louis Boston is just around the corner for post-date dread and some seriously deserved retail therapy.

Sunday Spotlight: Michelle McCormack

We are excited to kick-off Boston’s Sunday Spotlight with Michelle McCormack, an amazing lady behind Secret Boston, a 10,000+ members Facebook community about discovering Boston’s hidden spots, LoveTheCool, a popular fashion/music blog, and Fashion’s Night Out (FNO), a global initiative to celebrate fashion around the world.

Michelle’s favorite date spots in Boston

1. What are some of the best first date spots in Boston during the summer?

“I suggest walking through the Public Garden – less pressure as you’re walking and talking. The lobby at the Four Seasons is quiet, chill, and have great drinks (Rooms upstairs too, just in case!). Drink in Fort Point has the grooviest, fun atmosphere and there isn’t a liquor bottle in sight. When you order, the bartender fetches top shelf bottles from below and serves up cocktails in some of the coolest flatware in Boston! Secret Boston recommends Delux in South End – small, groovy, cool bar with good drinks.”

2. What are some of the best REAL date spots?

“MOOO is awesome. It has a great atmosphere, interior design and food. Hungry Mother in Cambridge is like your grandmas house, but romantic with awesome cocktails. Lastly, there is South End Buttery, which, besides being so great for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a Sunday date, never mind breakfast, is also a fun place to just chill at the bar in the back and, well, drink. Secret Boston recommends Dali in Somerville – a real funky but intimate bar with sizzling ambiance & delicious tapas for two.”

(Click here for a full list of Secret Boston’s suggestion on great date spots in Boston)

3. What is your idea of the best Sunday date in Boston?

Here is the itinerary:

1. Meet early at the Charles River for a walk.

2. Walk over to Aquitaine in the South End for Brunch.

3. Walk over to SoWa Open Market in the early afternoon for outdoor stall shopping and indoor shopping at SoWa Vintage Market.

4. Snack on the several food trucks.

5. Head over to the Colonnade Hotel and do a little day-drinking on the roof, in the sun, by the pool (possibly grab a room, but that really depends on how well you’re getting along :)

6. Dinner at Towne because it’s fabulous, yummy and cool.

7. And if after a day like that you’re still talking you should definitely find a mattress somewhere – either your house or one of these fab hotels:

  • Taylor House in JP (coolest Victorian house)
  • <a “””href=”http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID””” =1787″ target=”_blank”>W Hotel (no need to explain)
  • Revere Hotel (only boutique hotel in Boston with balcony off of every room)
