Q: Need Your Help!! Who pays on first dates?

March 14, 2014/in For Her /by CMB

I am a straight, single woman. I  dread the end of my first dates, when the bill comes, I never know what to do. Do I pay, does he pay, do we split? Does the person who suggested the place pay? What’s the etiquette?

5 Flirting Types You Have Probably Fallen For

March 3, 2014/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

Whether you consider yourself a flirt or not, chances are you fall into one of the following categories, and have fallen for someone who does as well. According to a study done at the University of Kansas there are five main types of flirting: traditional, physical, sincere, playful, and polite. Understanding which flirting style fits you best may help you achieve first date success and even enhance your current relationship. Lets see what type of flirt you are!

1. Traditional

When it comes to traditional flirts men are more likely to make the first move while women are reserved and wait for the right ‘one’ to hopefully come along. Online dating makes this technique more popular than ever before because now women can sit back and take their pick. If being a traditionalist is more your style then remember to have an appealing profile that properly represents who you are in order to entice the traditionalists to make a move.
2. Physical

Do you like to let your body do the talking when you are interested in someone? Perhaps when you start laughing your right hand naturally goes to touch the other person’s left knee. Getting physical is a sure way to drive the point across that you are interested without saying anything at all.
3. Sincere

The most common type of flirting technique is when sincere interests are being communicated. Seeing someone you admire and wanting to break the ice with them by  complimenting their style or what type of coffee they ordered at the cafe is an easy and subtle flirting style. Trying to find common ground and going into detail about the topics may lead to emotional ties that flourish into a relationship, even if it’s only a friendship.
4. Playful

Do you flirt to get your way or capture attention? Is flirting a means to an end for you? People who use flirting as a tool, rather than engaging in the act because they are interested in another person, fall into this category! Just keep in mind all of the hearts you have broken from sending mixed signals, it may come back to get you.
5. Polite

The least obvious type of flirt is the one who is reserved and introverted. Many times no one notices when the polite flirt is actually flirting. Every action is thought out in detail and has a purpose behind it. They may be overlooked by many but they’re usually the most genuine.

The Only Dating Timeline You’ll Ever Need: Dating Advice for Women

February 25, 2014/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

Ladies! Are you a little unsure as to what is ok and not okay to do in a relationship and when? Let me give you some insight as to what most guys are expecting to happen. Follow this timeline, and that special someone will be lining up at your door!

1 week: For the first few dates showing up on time and being yourself is a sure way to start the date off right. I know this may sound obvious but there is nothing that most guys find worse than someone being anybody but themselves. Be honest with me, but keep some things to yourself. Basically, I want to know how you truly feel about my taste in music but not about your dream centerpiece for your future wedding. Lastly, lets embrace the moment! Don’t be scared to make the first move. Trust me if I’m interested I won’t resist.

1 month: At this point suggesting to pay or split the bill on a date would definitely enhance the mood, even though I most likely won’t take you up on the offer. What I will easily accept with open arms, besides a hug from you, is a small, thoughtful gift or surprise on one of our dates. I just want to know you’re remembering what I like and that my efforts are making progress.

3 Months: Whether it’s on purpose or on accident, I’m going to introduce you as my girlfriend. I’ve been spending some nights at your place and vice versa so I’d love for you to leave some clothes and a toothbrush at my place. I want to see you with sweatpants and no makeup on! You don’t have to deck yourself out every time you see me. I’m attracted to you, not the clothes you wear or how perfectly you curled your hair. I’ll watch The Notebook with you, who knows maybe I’ll even tear up? If you surprise me with that beer I’ve been wanting to try I might actually enjoy it. Just don’t tell my friends!

6+ Months: Lets make it official… Facebook official! I’ve been with you this long, which clearly indicates I’m in it to win it. Don’t hesitate to ask me if you need help moving furniture or need me to run to CVS and get you supplies (tampons and chocolate) when you need them. I’m tired of buzzing you in all the time when you come over, so let’s swap keys to each other’s places. You’ll be my +1 to my brother’s wedding, although my family and friends will all know who I’m bringing beforehand. I would love to be your +1 to a work party or your cousin’s wedding coming up. Let’s take a trip together… wine tasting? Skiing? As long as it involves us it will be a smashing time.

I’m Single & Loving It This Valentine’s Day

February 13, 2014/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

It’s been a long week, and everyone you know is out and about, dressed to the nines with their googly eyes on. The most logical option for a single gal on Valentine’s Day is to stay inside. You’ll just be depressed or filled with disgust while looking at all of the cute and/or gross couples drooling over each other. Here are a few options to make your Valentine’s Day a little less sucky than usual.

1. dating advice for womenSpa Night

Dust off that mud mask sample you got a couple months ago and throw your hair in a bun. Going braless is an absolute must. Redo your month-old pedicure, and then throw some cucumbers over your eyes while you listen to John Legend’s new album “Love In The Future.”

Really not feeling the DIY tonight? Book an appointment at a local spa and leave the work to them while you relax. We recommend these:

Bliss Spa

Red Door

2. Movie or TV Marathon

This could go two ways… You could do a full night of heartache and watch P.S. I Love You or A Walk to Remember. We all need a good cry once in a while, not just on Valentine’s Day. These three have certainly made the CMB team a little hysterical:

Like Crazy

About Time (pictured left)

Remember Me

Or if you’re in the mood for something funny, login to your Netflix account and watch (or rewatch) the first season of Orange Is the New Black. HBOgo is being sneaky lately and posting GIRLS episodes a week early. Embrace how refreshingly honest and bold Lena Dunham is, and crack up while you’re at it.

3. Make A Real Meal For Yourself

No, you’re not the most unhealthy person that has ever lived, but you could be doing much better. Run to Whole Foods and pick out some delicious, healthy ingredients. If you need a little nudge in the right direction, go through your Pinterest boards and use the recipes you loved but have yet to try. Your body is your temple; worship it.

4. Girls Night with Wine and Cheese

All the single ladies? All the single ladies! Bust open the Pinot Grigio and some strawberries and gossip. Discuss which Grilled Cheese(s) you’d choose over a boyfriend from this list. Yummy.

5. Get Out of the House

How about a good workout? These classes are sure to get you into shape or at least make you sweat:

Hot Yoga

CrossFit

TRX

Collect your single friends (guys and girls) and check out a funny stand-up club. Here are some that made us laugh out loud:

Comedy Cellar in NYC

Punch Line Comedy Club in SF

The Comedy Store in LA

Whatever you decide to do, make it a good one! This doesn’t need to be a night of self-loathing. Fall in love with yourself first, and the rest will fall into place. Happy Valentine’s Day! More importantly, happy Singles Awareness Day!

Top 5 Ways to Meet Awesome Guys in the New Year

December 16, 2013/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

Loved our last post on finding singles during the holidays? Wondering how to meet awesome guys in the new year? Try out these new ideas.
5. Sign up for Improv. I tell people this one a lot but with a caveat–you might not actually meet a single dude in your improv class. In fact, I’ve been in all-women  improv classes. BUT THAT’S OK! Improv will teach you vital skills, such as how to stay in the moment, how to relax in uncertainty and, yes, even how to be brave and funny. And these are all skills that help you handle meeting people out in the real world. You absent-mindedly bonk into a cute guy at the airport while looking at your phone? Yes, and?
4. Visit the Dog Park. If you don’t have a dog, nevertheless make it a point to visit the dog park near your house at least once a week. You’ll never meet a more accepting group of people who have nothing more in common with each other than picking up dog poop. Ask about how your benchmate picked their breed of dog. You’ll sharpen your conversational skills, broaden your social circle, and likely meet some nice guys in the process.
3. Find a Good Produce Store. Yes, a store that sells nothing but produce. Try different hours, but specifically weekend afternoons. Produce requires a lot more concerted effort to buy than processed food, so chances are good you’re way more likely to meet relaxed shoppers who know they’re going to linger for a spell than you are at a grocery store where people are all business. Bonus: you know from the start they make healthy eating a priority.
2. Form a Bar Trivia Team.  Tell your friends you want to make this happen this year. Find a bar in a good neighborhood and make it happen. Make an email list to remind your friends to come each week. If more than 5 of your friends show up? Split into two teams. Trivia night attracts a much different kind of crowd than we usually associate with bars, so give it a shot.
1. Hack your City.  Code for America is a different kind of public service, one aimed at linking up the skills many young adults have with making their communities better. While a majority of the people you’ll meet are, in fact, coders, you need not be to volunteer. Check them out and learn more about what you can do.
And obviously, you should give Coffee Meets Bagel a go.

Holly's Dating Tips: Should I Ask Out a Bagel Via Text Message?

November 30, 2013/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

Q: I’ve read a lot of advice that says I should wait until a Bagel actually calls to set up a date. We’ve texted for a few days, but haven’t exchanged numbers. He’s asked if I wanted to meet up via text, so should I say yes?

A: A lot of antiquated advice on the internet tells you to call when setting up a first date. Or that you shouldn’t accept a first date arranged via text. Don’t listen to this advice. It was published back when Lindsay Lohan still had a thriving cinematic career. I’m sure before that, people were advising you against accepting anything less than a handwritten invitation for a first date and that the new fangled telephone was ruining the courtship process.

Texting is fine. In fact, at Coffee Meets Bagel, we give your own private text line with the explicit hopes you will use it to arrange a coffee date. See? We make answering this question easy.

Why a text line, though? Because until after you meet and probably not until after you’ve met several times, your bagel is a stranger. And though we’re not inciting “stranger danger” (you already know to meet in a public place for coffee, not a darkened alleyway in the warehouse district), it is hard for our generation to gab on the phone with someone we don’t know. It’s a social norm these days to reserve phone calls for emergencies and social intimacy. We can mourn the loss of it as a form of communication, but ask yourself how many close friends you’ve actually dialed this week? I rest my case.

So relax. Use the chat line. Set up the date. When you meet in real life, have your first conversation face-to-face the way Lindsay Lohan intended.

Is He Mr. Right? Just check his iPhone Apps.

September 15, 2013/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

People say eyes are the window to the soul. While your date’s eyes may be nice to look at, here at CMB we think his mobile apps are so much more revealing. With hundreds of thousands of apps available in the App store, the few that actually make it to your date’s iPhone say a lot about his personality, his interests, and his priorities. Is he a brainiac? Does he love to cook? Does he have multiple mobile dating apps? A quick peek at his iPhone apps will answer all your questions. So tell me, what does your date’s iPhone say about him?

Dating Tips for the 21st Century Princess

June 17, 2013/in For Her /by Guest Blogger

The following article is a guest post, courtesy of Catherine Nguyen

Hey Ladies,
Let’s face it, everyone wants to fall in love like Cinderella and her Prince Charming. Or ride away into the sunset on a magic carpet with their Aladdin. Whoever it is, there are definitely some dating tips you can pick up from your childhood princesses to turn your next Bagel into your future Prince Charming.
So, in honor of Pixar’s Monster’s University release this Friday, June 21st, we’re having our own Throwback Thursday (#tbt) blog post dedicated to Disney Princess dating tips! How do these lovely ladies manage their love life in the face of adversity, whether that be in the form of a crazy stepmom or crazed suitor, Jafar? Let’s find out:
Cinderella & Prince Charming
Although Cinderella was a servant for her wicked stepmother & sisters, and had nothing to wear for the upcoming Ball, she was innovative with what she could make do with. By simply sprucing up your date outfit, you can make a strong fashion statement about the type of woman you are. Check out Poshmark, mentioned in our latest post for recent college grads new to SF, the best app for shopping the closets of other women around the world – maybe you’ll find a ball-worthy gown for your next date!
dating tips
Cinderella manages to sneak away at the stroke of midnight due to a wardrobe malfunction, but leaves the Prince hanging for more at the expense of her glass slipper. If you want to be more gracefully reminded that you have to leave your date at midnight, check out the Twist app to give yourself (and any crazy stepsisters waiting for you) a reminder of what time you will be arriving home. No more abandoned glass slippers!
dating tips
Beauty & the Beast
“Don’t judge a book by its cover” – although quite self-explanatory for the Beast, the same can be applied to Belle. Ladies, don’t be afraid to show that beauty can come (and should come) with brains! In our latest post, 5 Reasons Why Nerds are the New Cool, nerds are not only smart but are more likely to emulate the “work hard, play hard” motto when having fun. So be flirty and sassy with your next (nerdy) Bagel, and maybe it can bring out the man hidden in the beast.

dating tips

Belle does this by jokingly throwing snowballs at the Beast, and helps him to loosen up!

Little Mermaid & Prince Eric
“It’s all about that body language” as Ursula said, right before taking away Ariel’s beautiful voice in exchange for human legs. Without it, Ariel had to learn how to capture the attention & affection of Prince Eric, using her body language, eye contact, and genuine interest. Romantic, one-on-one dates, like a boat ride through a lagoon with a singing crab in the background, or better yet a low-key summer festival in your local area (SF, LA, Chicago, & Boston, NY, DC are coming up soon!) are great ways to learn how to master your body language and make your next Bagel apart of your world.
